Newbery honor book-To Janey Larkin, the blue willow plate is the most beautiful thing in her life and a rememberance of home. Now that her dad was an itinerant worker they did not have a home to call their own. Janey didn't have any real friends and her family had to keep on the move looking for work. Janey promised the willow plate that her family will once again be able to set down roots in a community.
I loved this book as a child! Though it is a bit dated, my kids loved it too...
This was a Sonlight book.
For years my grandmother and mother in law both had blue willow dishes so I knew immediately what the picture on that plate would be. I also knew where Janey Larkin's heart was. Doris Gates takes the reader to the heart of this young girl and we live in her hopes and dreams and fears right along with her. I am sure young readers take that trip too. There is good reason for this book to have won the Newbery Honor award.
Janey Larkin can't remember when she's lived in the same place for more than a year. Her family has to keep moving so that her father can find work. But Janey longs for a real home and the chance to make friends.
When Mom gets sick and the Larkins don't have rent money, Janey offers to pay the rent with her beloved treasure---the beautiful blue willow plate that once belonged to her great-great-grandmother. Losing the plate seems like the end of the world to Janey, but it's really the beginning of something wonderful.

This was nice, but I've read others like it that were better. It's a young adult book, but it sort of connected to "The Grapes of Wrath", it's that era and circumstances. It's clean and nice for young people
Main character is a 10 year old girl, so I suppose it's geared towards that age group.

Book is in good condition with a few minor scuffs from wear. A Newberry Honor Award book published by Scholastic tells the story of Janey and her sacrifice of the blue willow plate that once belonged to her great-great grandmother in order to help the family pay the rent.
