I'm not sure how to characterize this audiobook. It begins with an interesting linear tale of a family emigrating to America in 1905 from the pogroms of Russia, first to the teeming ghettos of New York city then to Amarillo, Texas where they struggle to realize the American dream. So far, so good and there is quite a fascinating sub-plot.

The plot then shifts abruptly to the current period, three generations later, where anger, doubt and regret unravel in the face of unexpected death as the self-destructive protagonist struggles to come to terms with his past, present and future.

I enjoyed the first part of the book as an historical accounting of one family's experience as they became part of the fabric of early 20th century America. The second part I found disturbing and was not unhappy when this unlikeable ego-maniac's story ended.
