This story tells the reader about a woman who came from an abused home and married a man who likewise abused her. She left him to pursue her own life. Dance was her chosen profession but her dances were too exotic and erotic for the theaters. Discovered by a man who guided her life from that point, she becomes sought all over France to perform at parties, meetings, etc. As her fame spread she continually seeks love, courting the affections of men who gave her jewels, furs, even a home of her own. The man who loved her most was the one who discovered her but Mata Hari ignored him, taking him for granted.

This was a troubled time in her world as Europe prepared for war. Oblivious to the chaos around her, Mata Hari continued to dance and seek the affections of men, particularly the officers she preferred. As Germany began tromping over its neighbors, Mata Hari is recruited as a spy for France. Her assignment is to seek military information from the officers she bedded. However, something went wrong and she finds herself accused of being a double spy. Most of us recall what happened to this beautiful woman. The author believes that she was framed by someone who resented her or indicted by the chaos of the times
