It's been a long time since I read this book, but it has never left me. I was so impressed by it that I keep recommending it to people to read.
I think it has one of the most wonderful and intriguing beginnings:
It is said-and it is true-that just before we are born,a cavern angel holds his finger to our mouths and whispers, "Hush! Don't tell what you know."
This is why we have a cleft on our upper lips and remember nothing of where we came from.
Toward the end of the last century-in 1978, to be precise-a smooth-lipped boy appeared in the world.
Doesn't that totally make you want to read it???

Is it horror? Is it fantasy? Yes! A story of bravery and heroism, of childhood nightmares and the courage to face them.

This book actually gave me the creeps. Since that's a part of what it's supposed to do, it succeeded.

I read this book when it first came out. It is a definate KEEPER. Needs to be read and reread. Every time I pick it up I get something new from it.Will it change your life? Probably not, will it make you happy while you read it? Yes!
If you once believed the world could be saved, this is a novel for you--because now you will believe it again...

The thousand and first hero was born on the north-eastern coast of America in the fourth decade of the nuclear age.
In his ninth autumn, his life suddenly darkened.
Now! his heart cried. It is beginning--Now!

Starts out good but gets a trifle bizarre about midway through the story. Great idea for a story but the author just didn't seem to pull it off.
This was a quick read, despite its length (379 pages!). If you like good feeling stories about the battle between good and evil, then you will like this.
This is one book you won't soon forget. I have 2 copies, just in case, and read it every few years. It is wonderful!
I gave it 3 stars because although it wasn't an extremely captivating book, I was able to finish it without a problem. I thought the idea of the of the story was fantastic but the story itself was pretty boring. I also felt there was a lot of unanswered questions. All and all, it wasn't horrible but there is a lot better reads out there.
