Although I continue to read the Insp. Rutledge books and enjoy them, this one (as some others) seems to be too complicated for its own good. And a few too many coincidences, as well. The characters are well-drawn and the story evokes the time and place, but the plotting isn't the strong suit in this entry.

Great beginning, I thought this was going to be really good. Then it bogs down and finally the last 30 pages it's a rush to finish the book...characters appear seemingly out of nowhere. It felt like the author(s) were stumped and did the best they could think of to reach a somewhat plausible conclusion. That said, the body that caused the whole flap was never found...leaving a major piece of the puzzle hanging. A lot less Hamish, not sure if that was a good thing. Not the best of the series.

There were so many loose ends and unanswered questions at the end of this book that I thought, "it has be a two-parter"!! Is it?? Really took some slogging to get through as it was. And for such an unsatisfying ending....arghhh If the next book in the series doesn't finish the story I may have to cross Ian off my list of Desirable British Detectives!
