This is a sequel to Cannery Row. Steinbeck had extrodinary talent for molding characters, describing their lives, the places they lived, their struglles, passions, and their connections with one another. This book is delightful and beautifully descriptive.
Was one of your reading assignments in high school John Steinbeck? You should read at least one of his novel, they are classics.
