Who was Charles Ponzi? Was he an unrepentant scammer who charmed thousands of people out of millions of dollars? Or was he just a fool in over his head, infected with a fatal optimism that he could buy or create a legitimate business successful enough to make his ridiculous promises work?

Either way, it's a terrific tale. After the excesses of our time, it's fascinating to read of another time when anything seemed possible, even 50% returns in 45 days.
