Back to his roots, in this work, Francis' hero is a jockey, although he gets fired as a jockey on the very first page! The charge is drug use--bogus, of course--but it throws our young (17) hero into an entirely unfamiliar world of politics. Classic Dick Francis.

A mystery combined with politics and horse racing. I found it to be slow paced in places, but I stuck with it and it got better.
I enjoy all of Dick Francis' books.
If you are a horse lover and you are not reading Dick Francis, now is the time to start. Politics, suspense and horse racing-what more could you ask for! Most horse racing fans are familiar with equestrian author, Dick Francis. This is another of his many tales. English Parliament setting and the dangers and corruption within the racing world make this a "hard to put down" story. I am slowly making my way through everything this author has written. This is one of his better ones. It is a good mystery, a different story angle and there are HORSES in it!
I have most of Dick Francis's books and love each one of them. I just happen to have two of these
I love Dick Francis books and this one was one of the best that I think I've read. A lot of people say to me, "Oh, he writes about horses, doesn't he?", as though it were not a subject they find interesting. Believe me, it doesn't matter whether you're interested in horses or not. I'm not really interested in horses at all. However, all of his books that I've read involve horse racing in some way, although sometimes it is only a small connection. His characters are very real and he makes you care about what happens to them, and there is always a great deal of suspense in his stories, and they're all hard to put down.
A great mystery, combined with horse jockeying and politics. Truly another great read!
As usual Dick Francis does it again. An easy and enjoyable read amnd a few surprises
Fast-paced. A pleasure to read. Francis is a master storyteller!
Dick Francis writes about the most courageous wonderful heros, not idiots, just good people who work hard to get out of bad situations. His heros are so likable and you would just enjoy having them for friends. I've read everyone of his books, some many times over.

classic Dick Francis. Love the hero, hate the bad guy. A good, fast, action-filled read.
Another horse mystery by Dick Francis. This one is set around the political field involving a father and his son Ben who's only goal in life is to ride race horses. Ben returns to his father's house and becomes part of Dad's political rise to office, while giving his father the appearance of being the family man that he wants. Ben also helps keep Dad alive from someone with a ax to grind. Enjoyable and fun reading and highly recommended.
Loved this book! It's a bit different from Dick Francis' usual thrillers, in that his main character, Benedict, is 18 years old when the story starts. It's fascinating seeing this story--always written in first person--from a teenager's point of view, and watching him grow up as the story progresses. Very well done, as always. Dick Francis is a master storyteller!
Very entertaining. Only 5 cassettes, so long enough to develop a good plot, but doesn't take forever to get through either. Great weekend travel audio cassette.
Cool! Like all Dick Francis books. Well written. Great plot.
Another great Dick Francis.
Fast paced Dick Francis.
