Welcome to our 2011 Military Donation Program, Story Time with Soldiers...

At PaperBackSwap, we firmly believe in the power of reading... and the power of giving. We are excited to be able to extend our charitable work to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Regardless of why or where they are deployed, these men and women and their families contend with danger, separation from loved ones and rigorous physical conditions.

BIG NEWS!   WE MET OUR GOALS THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!

What can we say?  You amazed and touched us with the incredibly quick response to the 2011 Story Time with Soldiers Program.  We, along with the United Through Reading organization, are so grateful for the outpouring of love from PaperBackSwap members for this wonderful program that helps keep families connected. 

As soon as we can, we will begin shipping the boxes of books to where they are needed the most.  We are proud to be able to help keep this program running for our deployed military members and their loved ones.  Please check back for updates and news about where the books go and the happiness they bring! 

Your donations will now make a difference in the lives of our military families as they protect and serve our country.

Once again, through the generosity of our members we have succesfully completed yet another Books for Schools Donation Campaign. 10,750 books are being distributed to needy schools across the country.

Thank you for helping to put books in the hands of children who may never had a book to call their own. And for sharing the love of reading with a new generation.

We can not do this without you and we are so grateful to our members!

PaperBackSwap and United Through Reading

Story Time with Soldiers 2011

Sometimes it's the small things that mean the most...

PaperBackSwap is proud to support our military personnel again this year by partnering with the nationally recognized nonprofit organization, United Through Reading.  Their mission is to unite families facing physical separation by facilitating the bonding experience of reading together.  One of the most difficult things a child can experience is having a parent deployed for an indeterminate period of time.  The United Through Reading® Military Program helps ease the stress of separation for military families by having deployed soldiers read children’s books aloud via DVD for their child to watch at home.

With PaperBackSwap members' help, the children will receive not only the DVD of their parent (or other family member) reading to them, but the actual book, as well!  Due to the extra costs of running this program, we are asking for donations of PBS credits and/or PBS money to support this effort.  The new books will be shipped to pre-deployment command centers, USO locations, and overseas for the soldiers to use to create the story time videos for their children.  Service men and women in all branches of the military all over the world will benefit from your gift.

Reading together unites families … together, we can send thousands of books to help our soldiers share the gift of reading with their loved ones.

Thank you for showing your support for those serving our great country, and Thank you for encouraging the continuation of loving, "story time" traditions for military families separated by deployment.

Thank you, PaperBackSwap members, for your tremendous generosity! 

Your gift of thousands of Scholastic Books will be sent to military units around the world so that deployed parents (and aunts, uncles, and older siblings, too!) will be able to connect to their children through the magical act of reading these storybooks aloud on DVD through United Through Reading’s Military Program. 

We know that this simple but profound act helps ease the fear, uncertainty, and anxiety felt by children in military families.  They watch the DVD over and over again.  It’s like having ‘Mommy or Daddy on demand’.  We also know that the experience is that much more powerful when the children are able to turn the pages of the book as they read along with the parent.  We hear stories about children taking the treasured books to bed with them. 

All this is to say that we at United Through Reading cannot thank you enough for keeping these military families, separated by deployment, top of mind.  Each book makes a difference to a military child.
