I was VERY disappointed... from the cover text, I was expecting a mystery/suspense/thriller which it is not. It is five stories connected by a few characters. But I couldnt really sympathise with any of the characters and didnt find any particularly likable. There really didnt seem like there was a plot enough for me.

Disappointing read - I didn't get through even 1/2 the book. The various stories were not engaging, the characters were odd and not relatable. I really wanted this book to be great but it fell extremely short for me.

This book was a HUGE disappointment. I ended up scanning through the last two chapters because it was nothing but repetitive blubbering. There is no real plot that links the five different chapters together. I suppose some might think Bolano a real intellectual for mentioning and quoting numerous authors who were either famous for being great or controversial (sometimes both), but I found it annoying. Nothing entertaining or enlightening about an intellectual tooting his own horn. Not sure how this book won awards or ended up on the "must-read" list.
