What a great book. The characters are real, the story is believable and it kept my interest all the way through until I wished it didn't end.
First time I have read this author and will definately look for more of his.

Mississippi cotton country in 1945 seems peacefulat least until turmoil comes causing good and evil to go to war. Missy and Bobby Parker are white children from a well-to-do family and Junior Washington, a black friend, are caught in the epicenter of the battle.
Afterwards, Missy begins a mission that fuels the fires of aggression in the evil left in the area. The war destroys the lives of those around Missy, affecting her family and the community. The lives of both the Washington and the Parker families are now bound by spiritual warfare.

At first I liked the book, but I ended up not caring much for it pretty quickly. (*Warning: Spoilers!*)
Firstly, the story proceeded at a fair enough pace, but then was long and drawn out. The battle of the snakes against the 3 kids took far too long to detail. He kept re-telling parts from different people's eyes which felt like just a way to drag it out.
Second, some things didn't have proper placement. Back to the scene of the snake battle, there were two characters that didn't seem to really have much of a place. The story would have played out exactly the same had they not been there.
Another instance of misplaced characters was some of the back story on evil woman from the beginning of the book. Her history seemed to have no place where it landed in the book.
Lastly, there was serious lack of cohesion and description of events that played out. For example, when Mason shot the snake point blank when it was biting Junior's chest. The way it was worded suggested that the snake was basically obliterated right at that moment, but then suddenly, it was being obliterated some more. Really? I don't think the writer had a good grasp of how to describe what he was seeing in his mind's eye. And the pacing of his descriptions were also off.
All in all, I thought this was going to be a fun book and it had me entranced for quite a while. It quickly fell out of my favor and I put it aside. Such a shame... First book I've ever done that with, too.

In the summer of 1945 in the small Mississippi town of Mares Point seven year old Missy Parker, her twelve year old brother Bobby, and their black friend "Junior" Washington were inseparable. David makes Missy promise to teach the Word to his unbeliever older brother Pat but his heart on the subject of God is closed mind. Pat wants her but resents the religion that he believes keeps them apart and only a miracle will change his mind.
Readers who love the works of Frank Peretti will want to read ABIDING DARKNESS, Book One of The Black or White chronicles as the storyline is fast paced and exciting. The unseen supernatural angels and demons who work through humans add a mythical perspective to the plot. Missy is bright, beautiful, and unyielding in her religious convictions which make her the perfect counterpoint to Pat the unbeliever. John Aubrey Anderson is a talented storyteller who has written a fine inspirational saga.
