A dark book about a murder of an abortionist. For a mystery I thought the identity of the murderer was pretty obvious (and I don't like to figure those out ahead of time) but I think the author was focusing on the characters and relationships more. This book is pretty depressing- it includes graphic descriptions of abortions, some child pornography, an annoying psycho and just an overall dark tone that follows when people hide dark secrets under a facade of perfection. Despite all that, it was a fast-paced read that held my interest and was well-written.

I will probably be in the minority by saying that I really did not care for this book. It seems to me that the author broke a couple of the really big rules of fiction writing. Yet, she got good reviews from Anita Shreve and Maureen Corrigan (NPR), so what do I know?

WOW- I finished this in a day. It was a great mystery of who killed the abortion doctor and how it affects her family, neighbors and police investigating the crime.

Although I personally don't agree with abortion, I found this book impossible to put down after reading just one or two pages. The author tries very hard to be objective not pushing either side. The story of the relationships between the doctor, her husband, her daughter, the daughter's ex boyfriend, all make for a very good attention consuming story.
