What I love about this book club (PBS) is that I've been able to "try out" authors I've never read before. With very little investment, including the savings on gas for authors whose books I may never find at my library, I've been able to broaden my horizons with books by authors I've always wondered about. Some of them I've been able to put to rest. They just weren't for me. The rest are authors to explore more since I'm not sure yet if I could get into them and, best of all, the winners I've found. One of these winners is Perri O'Shaughnessy, the pen name of 2 sisters. "Acts of Malice" is the first book of O'Shaughnessy I've read. It is part of a series featuring defense attorney Nina Reilly, a truly likeable hero. All of the characters are well written; they definitely kept me interested. The villain's identity is a mystery until about two thirds of the way through. But the plot is so engaging, I didn't mind that he was revealed so soon. In fact, it was appropriate since the book is really about dysfunctional families, in this case, a wealthy one. A member of this family is accused of murdering one of the brothers. Nina agrees to take on the case but as she gets more involved, she becomes more and more confused about her client's innocence. The twists in the plot are believable. Emotions out of control and distorted by the characters - envy, lust, power hungry, rage - all play havoc in the members of this familys' lives. Tragically, people are murdered because of such twisted feelings but they sure make a good read. Couldn't put the book down! After all, it's not my family....

It's been awhile since I've read this book, but I do remember it being a page turner. I liked the fact that the main character was a woman, a strong woman, if I remember correctly! Enjoy!

This was one heck of a read. I almost pulled a one-nighter because I found it hard to put the book down. Plot twists, characters who aren't what they seem, some who are exactly what they seem, but which is which? The plot centers around Lake Tahoe and Nina Reilly, single mother, one-woman law firm. Her new client is a man accused of murdering his own brother, a crime too horrible to believe. Suddenly Nina is at the center of the storm as her client's family turns against him and Nina finds that his life isn't the only one hanging in the balance, cuaght by an act of malice.

From back of book:

The New York Times bestselling Nina Reilly novels have dazzled both readers and critics with their crackling blend of legal suspense and taut human drama. Now Perri O'Shaughnessy, hailed as "smart", "gripping", and "complex" by the San Francisco Chronicle, brings us her best--and most explosive--Nina Reilly novel yet.
