The Adventures of DIXIE NORTH Author:Herbert Burton PREFACE — Dixie North, an eleven-year-old stranded orphan, was a lovable, adventurous boy who longed for love and the assurance of belonging to someone. He knew the value of friendship, and he appreciated every act of kindness. — Dixie and his friend, Chuck Hill, had many adventures together. There were days and days of swimming, diving, riding ... more »their ponies, camping and all the many things boys can find to make their days exciting as well as sometimes dangerous. Their episode with the skunk was full of laughs but ended with a very sad note.
Chuck's mother, Mrs. Hill, proved to be a real friend and benefactor to Dixie. Without her, Dixie probably could not have managed to live with his secret so long. At times, Dixie thought Mrs. Hill had guessed his secret, because of the the way she helped him through so many tight spots.
In the life of Bay, one of the teenage thugs, there was a big change from a lazy, good-for-nothing thug to a young man who was respected by both adults and children. This change is brought about by Mr. Mains, the Boys' Club director, who realized Bay's potential and interested him in constructive activities as well as in going back to school. Bay's young life had the roughest of edges.
Dixie was finally relieved of having to live with his secret. He found a real home and could look forward to a life of normal resposibilities for a boy his age.« less

this book is very dear to my heart it was first read to my fifth grade class at tr simmons elementary school in jasper, alabama. i purchused my copy at walden books in the jasper mall in jasper, the story is wonderful. to me i guess because it's set in my hometown of jasper alabama. so many of the places it talks about are still here, camp o'rear. i was a boy scout and camped out there. i had wonderful memmories of that place and all of jasper. mr burton really captured the spirit of jasper in this book i still read it from time to time. it still brings tears to my eyes. it really is a wonderful story
This is a wonderful book; I had several occasions to meet Mr. Burton, and each time I told him a larger number of times I had read his book - he loved to hear that so much that he would autograph and GIVE a copy to anyone who spoke to him! He was a terrific man! Anyone who reads this book will not be disappointed!

I read this book to my children as they were growing up. It was a favorite time for all of us, my husband, my children and I would lay on our bed while I read. Many nights I read until my voice just left me. The children would beg for "just one more page". My youngest son will be 20 in a few days, he wants "The Adventures of Dixie North" for his birthday and we can't find it. If any one has any information on a "reasonably" priced copy of this book, please contact me at emgarret@hotmail.com I joined this book swap club because when I searched for Dixie North, (I thought) it showed that someone had one to swap, apparently, I'm not sure how to search for what I want on here.
