Being from Mississippi, I love any book that is set in the my home state and this one is no exception. Sugar Beth Carey has come back to Parrish, Mississippi and she has brought her reputation for wrecking havoc with her. This is a great read.

This is one of my favorite books... The characters are so good. I normally stick to historical romance - but I really like this author. The characters are very real, the dialogue is rich and funny - laugh out loud in some parts. I have read this book three times! Can't recommend highly enough.

Sugar Beth is willing to let them have a bit of deserved payback from her...but only to a point.
This author has a complex, intelligent style of writing, along with a wicked sense of humor. I laughed out loud at least a dozen times while reading this story. The verbal sparring of the main characters put me in mind of Kate and Petruchio from "Taming of the Shrew". When Sugar Beths chief enemy, hunky Colin Byrne, installs chain across Sugar Beth's driveway, she responds by pushing her dog through the hedges to do his business in Colin's manicured yard. When Colin coerces Sugar into being his housekeeper and allows her to use only the back door in what was once her family home, she retaliates by using his Waterford crystal as a dog dish and generally makes Colin's life as difficult as she possibly can, knowing that he's enjoying his opportunity to humble her too much to fire her. As Colin and Sugar Beth cross swords in their battle of wills, their mutual resentments gradually transition into mutual respect and then into even deeper, more complicated and unsettling feelings.
The character development skills of this author are impressive. Possessing amazing insight into emotional relationships, she strikes resonant chords within my own emotional memories and touches me like no other author I've read. I felt I actually knew the people in the story and cared about what might happen to them. The characters all had depth and subtlety. Even the dog had a personality that made me like him! As the principle characters were fleshed out and their inner thoughts revealed, I found myself considering how often I might also share in their flaws such as misjudging the intentions of others. As much as I hate to do so (and get embarrassed when caught in the act), I shed more than a few tears over the heartaches of these fabricated people of Parrish, Mississippi. Ms. Phillips has quite a gift for sucking readers into her stories. Aside from the prerequisite happy ending, Ms. Phillip's plots are unpredictable, and can include some jaw-dropping surprises.
Being a long-time Mississippi resident, I can say that this author, despite being a Yankee, bless her heart, truly nailed the ambiance of living in the Deep South, where this particular tale takes place. I'm going to go find my "Coca-Cola Cake" recipe now, and give a call to my Aunt Nellie Jo. (Yes, really, y'all.) I do declare that, yes, we really are proud of our state's famous writers, just as Ms. Phillips mentioned in her story. Some of our Mississippi Writers Guild members even do great impersonations of those renowned authors in presentations to school children and other interested parties. Ain't no lie! Ms. Phillip's other books have varied settings, but she certainly is no slouch when it comes to doing her research.

I kept looking for a place to stop and put her book down, but when I'd get to the end of a chapter, there would inevitably be some outrageous twist in the plot that would mercilessly hook me and drag me bleary-eyed right into the next chapter. I hope she feels guilty!

Out of all of Susan's books. This was my ultimate favorite. I would read it again and again. I recomend anyone to read this book if they are looking for something funny, sad and yet very good romance. I don't think I laughed so much or cry so much as for a book. This is a book for those that are looking for this combination!!

I wasn't sure I was going to like this book, what with a tarnished and obviously flawed heroine and an unattractive hero (I'll admit to being shallow about these things when reading romance novels!), but I LOVED this book. It didn't take me long to fall in love with the characters and I thoroughly enjoyed their story. This book made me laugh at least as many times as it made me want to cry.

Could hardly put this book down and not because I wanted to find out what happened next but because I fell in love with all the characters! What a wonderful story with such a sweet message. Sugar Beth is hardly the normal heroine but I fell in love with her anyway. Of course I spent the first part of the book wondering if the author didn't want us to hate her as much as like her. The verbal sparring was excellent and the one liners were classic! I really enjoyed this book for many reasons, excluding the neat little packaging at the end, but mainly because this story was about flaws. Strangely enough I began to love the characters not in spite of their flaws but because of them. See how far we can come...

A great read. True Southern comfort and "small town charm". Great humor and a wonderfully romance. Love the solid characters. You almost fill you know them. While are two great central characters, the entire cast are the heroines and heroes. I would loge to see this in a movie.

I really enjoyed this book, bless its heart, mostly for the hero Colin and his British dandy-isms juxtaposed against the antics of the large Southern cast of characters. Hopefully that mouthful of a sentence made sense. The book made me laugh out loud, especially when Sugar Beth would call him "Your Grace". After reading I ordered several more of SEP's works.
Ain't She Sweet was the 1st book that I read by Susan Elizabeth Phillips and I have been hooked on her writing ever since. This is one of her best! Her books always contain women with a strong personality and a man that you love to hate and hate to love.

I didn't think I'd like this book to be perfectly honest. However, the author created a realistic story with so many problems, not overly done, but told the story in such a way you were hung to every word. I liked all the characters, Sugar Beth (though not the name), I liked Colin and Winnie and Ryan and Gigi. They all grew and you enjoyed the unravelling of this great story. A real good read! (or listen as I did)

It took me awhile to appreciate Sugar Beth. A spoilt child who returns to her home town with a chip on her shoulder. After seeing how she was treated by the townsfolk though, even if she did deserve it, really bothered me. Watching her grow and come into her own had me cheering her on!

I didn't think I would like Sugar Beth but I did. I especially liked that she wasn't all apologetic and regretful at the start and that she maintained some of her snotty ways. It's also great because no one is really a bad guy here and everyone has a story to tell.
The side story of trying to find the painting is very similar to "Heroes Are My Weakness" plot (not sure which book came first) but the characters are just slightly different enough to make it interesting.
A lot of humor and sassiness that I have come to count on with Phillips books. Well worth the read.

I really enjoyed this book, it had a wonderful storyline with a very strong woman who is making something of herself even in the worst of times. Makes you laugh out loud at her southern sass.
