What can I say about a Sue Grafton novel. I just love the Kinsey Malone character. I haven't read her in awhile ....sorry if I spelled it wrong. Kinsey is someone I would like to know. She is smart, and funny. Sue's books are exciting.

A for Alibi establishes Kinsey Milhone solidly in a mystery full of red herrings. I have read a few alphabet mysteries of Sue Grafton before this one and I always appreciate her sense of organization in telling the story and down to earth independent attitude. Even when Kinsey is underpressure she's got it together! As a serious reader, I highly recommend Graftons Alphabet series, I'm going tokeep reading all the way to Z!

I found this book to have a slow beginning and was a bit outdated as it was written in the early '80s. However, while I had a hunch who the criminal was, it was more twisted than I originally thought. This was a good read overall and will probably read the entire series.

Sue Grafton's first 'alphabet' murder. Kihnsey is put on the trail of the real killer of Laurence Fife. His wife spent eight years in prison, now she is out, and both Kinsey & Nikki do not know there was a second corpse in the past and a new corpse in their future.

I have to say, this was not my favorite mystery book. Perhaps it's just that it was the first in the series. I do have "B is for Burglar", so I will give another one a chance. After all, I didn't especially enjoy Janet Evanovich's "One for the Money", but I loved "Two for the Dough."

I didn't find the central character, Private Investigator Kinsey Millhone, to be especially sympathetic. I became a little confused between some of the characters at one time. I found the writing to be a little "lumpy" at times. I didn't find the romantic interest to be very interesting. Sometimes there was a reference to something only briefly mentioned (and forgotten) earlier in the book. I did guess the ending long before it came. The book wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. It just kind of washed over me.

Really great read. Very consistently paced, a solid whodunit. Kinsey Millhone is an old-fashioned, dyed-in-the-wool private eye. She's one tough cookie, every bit the equal of Parker's Spenser. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of Grafton's alphabet series.

This the first book of a series dealing with a female private investigator that continues so far into letter "T". When Laurence Fife was murdered, few mourned his passing. A prominent divorce attorney with a reputation for single-minded ruthlessness on behalf of his clients, Fife was also rumored to be a dedicated philanderer. Plenty of people in the picturesque Southern California town of Santa Teresa had a reason to want him dead. Including, thought the cops, his young and beautiful wife, Nikki. With motive, access, and opportunity, Nikki was their number one suspect. The jury thought so too.

Eight years later and out on parole, Nikki Fife hires Kinsey Millhone to find out who really killed her late husband.

A trail that is eight years cold. A trail that reaches out to enfold a bitter, wealthy, and foul-mouthed old woman and a young boy, born deaf, whose memory cannot be trusted. A trail that leads to a lawyer defensively loyal to a dead partner -- and disarmingly attractive to Millhone; to an ex-wife, brave, lucid, lovely -- and still angry over Fife's betrayal of her; to a not-so-young secretary with too high a salary for too few skills -- and too many debts left owing: The trail twists to include every turn until it finally twists back on itself with a killer cunning enough to get away with murder.

This was the first of the Alphabet mysteries that I read. I picked up it up as a whim and became completely hooked. A introduces private investigator Kinsey Millhone. She's a twice-divorcee, who lives in a spartan studio. In first book in the series, she's hired by a woman who went to prison for murdering her husband. She's out and wants Kinsey to clear her name. It's fast paced but packed with many characters to keep track of.

Anyone who reads mysteries probably already knows this is the beginning of the Kinsey Milhone alphabet series. I've had Y IS FOR YESTERDAY on my shelf for a long time as I wanted to read this series in order, but I kept putting it off because there's so many. Which just makes it worse of course. I don't think I've read her since "X" came out five years ago. I read this book first over 30 years ago, and I think it holds up pretty well. It's obviously set in the 80s, there's no modern technology. I did not remember the plot at all, but I picked up a villain immediately - not sure if that's memory or just a lot of time reading mysteries. It's got a definite hard-boiled tone to it; I found myself "hearing" her as though from the old TV show Dragnet, that kind of short choppy voice. There's a lot of minutiae like what she eats, where she goes running and so forth. There's a few nitpicks I had, but not much. I still liked it all these years later, and I hope that continues over the next six months or longer, as I get to all of them.

If I could describe this book in one word, it would be "bland." If you like wit and humor, this book is not for you. The one thing that did made me laugh was only funny because the wording was so bad.

It's not even a long book, but quite a bit of it could have been cut out, in my opinion. Too many mundane details. One-dimensional characters, with the worst being the main character. I could not relate to Kinsey Millhone at all. If anything, I found her incredibly annoying.

Definitely not a book I would recommend or a series I plan to continue.

Kinsey Millhone and has a very straight-forward approach to crime. She's is an especially memorable detective. She's tough and no-nonsense, but still has her vulnerable points. She's smart, but not a superwoman; rather, a believable, down-to-earth heroine.

The matter-of-fact diagloge is effective & I enjoyed the insights into Kinsey's detection technique along the way.

With motive, access, and opportunity, Nikki was their number-one suspect. The jury thought so, too.

Eight years later and out on parole, Niki Fife hires Kinsey Millhone to find out who really killed her late husband.
