Humanity has spread across the universe, but at a huge cost. The technology that gave humankind the stars has genetic implications that have creates as many mutations as there are colonized planets. The interaction between the colonists and Earth has become tense and complicated.
A young, sheltered, and very unusual girl becomes a pawn in the midst of this struggle. This book chronicles her journey into adulthood and self-discovery.

Richly detailed science fiction; good characterization with many sympathetic characters and a twisty plot. The reader learns Jamisia's "skill" long before she herself does, so there's lots of interesting tension as we wait for her to figure it out before the bad guys capture her. The various cultures are great, would like to see more books in this universe.
