Lewis begins in eleventh-century Languedoc and focuses his discussion upon The Romance of the Rose, The Faerie Queene and poets such as Chaucer, Gower, and Thomas Usk. The book is ornamented with quotations from poems in many languages, including Classical and Medieval Latin, Middle English, and Old French.
