I just recently became more interested in this case since I am living closer to West Memphis now. I have watched the HBO movies "Paradise Lost" and "Paradise Lost 2". I have also read "Devil's Knot" by Mara Leveritt, which is an excellent book about the case of the West Memphis Three.
Almost Home is more about Damien's upbringing and the struggles that he endured in his young life. There is very little about the trial, which was fine for me since I did read Devil's Knot.
To me, this whole trial and how these 3 young men became scapegoats for murders I feel they did not commit is sickening. It is also rather scary to me that there are still so many closed minded, backwoods beliefs out there. Although this case did take place in 1993 it might as well have taken place in 1893.
I can say that I am very glad that my High School years were spent in the more open minded area of San Diego, CA from 1982 to 1986. I also listened to Heavy Metal music, read books by Stephen King, and wore a lot of black clothes. To think what could have happened to me if I went to High School in West Memphis...it send shivers down my spine.
My only complaint with this book is that there are many typos. Other than that it was very insightful and interesting to learn more about this young man. I can only hope that this case can be retried in Supreme Court and these young men are set free.
