I just finished this book, it was absolutely riveting. I could not read it fast enough. There is so much to be learned here about mental illness. There is still so much yet to be learned about mental illness. It is a very sad situation.

this book offers insight into the process of a capital murder trial. things leading up to the murders, things that go on in the courtroom, the jury selection process, etc. there are many things offered in this book that the public was not made aware of at the time of the trial. i was on a capital murder jury, and this book was very "true" to the whole process.

Excellent analysis of a very sick woman and the failure to treat her correctly before she committed the most terrible crime ever.

A true story exceptionally well written. Suzanne O'Malley's reportage is stunning for its depth, its persistence, and its compassion I cant imagine the leg work that went in to her own investgation to write this book.

Updated with new information, this riveting account of the Andrea Yates case--the mother who drowned her five children in their suburban Houston home--exposes the human mystery and the legal maneuvering surrounding the most horrifying crime in recent history.

To be honest, I was very hesitant to even read this book. Like most people, when Andrea Yates killed her five children by drowning them in the family's bathtub, the only information I knew was what I heard from the media. I almost immediately formed my own opinion -- Andrea Yates was evil. So it took me awhile to open my mind to the fact that there could be more to the story.

Once I started reading ARE YOU THERE ALONE? I absolutely could not read fast enough. This book is fascinating in delving into the issue of mental illness, and what it truly means. I learned about psychosis, about postpartum depression, about bipolar disorder, and much, much more.

Although there are things I still don't understand (how Rusty Yates, Andrea's husband, could have left her alone with their children when he knew she was seriously mentally ill, for example), I have to say that I have a greater understanding of why Ms. Yates did what she did.

Hers was a horrific crime, and one for which she deserved to be punished. But she also deserved to get help for the problems that had plagued her for many years. For that, Suzanne O'Malley and the doctors, nurses, and many others involved in the case are to be commended.

Wow! I never imagined how mentally disturbed this young woman was. That by no means excuses the actions of Andrea Yates who drowns her five children in the bath tub in order for them to gain their "salvation." This book offers an intriguing look into her motivations and thoughts. It makes you question her doctors, her family, and those who were around her on a daily basis to allow her the opportunity to be alone with the children. This book would drag at times and is not the best true crime book I've read, but was fascinating - and sad - nonetheless.

An account of the horrendous drownings of the 5 Yates children by their mother, the events that led up to the event as well as the aftermath. If you had any doubt at all that Yates was mentally ill, you won't after reading this. I think that my one surprise was feeling more kindly disposed toward her husband Rusty, who was villified by the press at the time.

I didn't care for the writing style. This was an interesting case, but the book could have been written better.

Even after reading the reviews, I could not understand how someone, (well, not just someone but a loving, devoted mother) could do what Andrea Yates did to her 5 small children. This book answers that question in a dignified, informative, and above all respectful way. I'll never look at her, the case, or mental illness in the same way. A must read! Page turner, could not put it down!

I took a jury less than 4 hours to find a Houston housewife Andrea Yates guilty of the drowning deaths of 3 of her five children-and a mere half hour to sentence the troubled woman with a stunning history of severe mental problems to a life in prison. But beyond the media coverage of her heinous crimes, there is a story that only investigative reporter Suzanne O'Malley has fully illuminated.
