This engaging compilation of love letters written in the early months of 1946 by a young navy pilot named Jack Sweeney can only be described as a sweet love story that captures the personality of an intelligent and fun-loving man. Emma Sweeney, an author and literary agent, has compiled these letters as an homage to the father she never knew (Jack was killed on duty in an airplane crash in 1956, leaving four sons and his unborn daughter). The preface and afterword are a heartfelt explanation of both her need to know her father and the results of her research. Unfortunately, the book does not hold as much in the way of historical value as such works as Since You Went Away: World War II Letters from American Women on the Home Front and Miss You: The World War II Letters of Barbara Wooddall Taylor and Charles E. Taylor. Additionally, Emma's mother's letters do not survive to give us a fuller picture of this courtship. However, the memoir is charming and would be a welcome addition to larger public libraries or libraries with a large collection of wartime correspondence.

This is such a charming read! After a while you just fall in love with Jack Sweeney, the author of the letters in this book. A funny, sensitive, and bigger-than-life soul. It is a quick read, but it will stay with you. Highly recommend to all!
A book of WWII love letters written by a US serviceman to his then girlfriend. The letters, tied in faded pink ribbon, were found in a drawer by his daughter after her mother's death. By reading these letters the daughter came to know and love the father who died before she was born.

Sweet story of a daughter who got to know her father through letters he wrote to her mother while in active service duty, before his death. Quick read I enjoyed very much.
A good bunch of letters writen from a young soldier to the girl he met only 2 weeks before. It is also about a daughter's quest to find out about the father she never met. I thought it was a good read and should be read by those who are searching for answers about who they are.
A daughter's search for information about her father, whose plane was lost at sea on a secret mission during the last days of WWII. Will a packet of letters found in the back of her mothers' dresser help her get to know and understand what her mother and father experienced in those turbulent times. Beautiful !
