Ambrose Bierce is a muckraker reporter in late 1800's San Francisco whose literary target is the Southern Pacific Railroad. He and his fellow reporter Tom Redmond are faced with horror of a killer known as the "Slasher" for his method causing the rapid demise of ladies in the bay area. The book intoduces the reader to a group of individuals known as the Queen of Spades from the silver days of Virginia City.
