James Carroll compassionately displays the conflict between his father, General Joseph Carroll, his own entry and exit of priesthood and the Vietnam war. Their difference of opinions and ideas drives a life long wedge in their relationship and still ends with a son who deeply loved his father.

This is a fascinating and moving book, especially to those of us who were around during the Vietnam war. It was sad to read about the conflict between James Carroll and his father, both of whom were/are very firm in their beliefs. An excellent book about the tragedies the war caused on the homefront.
