An American Tragedy is one of my favorite novels of all time. A true masterpiece. It is loosely based on a true story, the case of Chester Gillette. The characters are rich and interesting and not cookie-cutter or two-dimensional. A fascinating read. Highly recommended!

You saw the movie with Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift and Shelley Winters in her Academy Award winning role - now read the book. The time setting is earlier 1900's and the book is much more chilling than the movie. Dreiser is deep inside Clyde's mind.

The movie costarred Shelley Winters in an academy award winning role, with Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor. What you couldn't see in the movie was the working of Clyde's mind as he wrestled with his human nature. A fine study of the human condition.
