This is the memoir of an American officer who was captured during the Invasion of Sicily in 1943 (as my own dad was). It tells just what it was like to be a POW of the Germans. The author ended up in a POW camp in Poland, then at the war's end, in Russia. If you like true narratives of WWII, don't miss this one. (My dad escaped, declining to be a guest of the German govt., and walked/fought his way across Italy to Switzerland. Glad he didn't have to go through what this man did for the next two years!)

A very interesting read from one who experienced it. Written in a rather taciturn fasion, there is as much behind the words as in them. Quite an interesting section on how the YMCA workers faced danger to help POWs.
