What a wonderful experience "An Amish Country Christmas" was. It is actually 2 stories in one. The first story written by Naomi King called "The Christmas Visitors" I didn't want to let this book out of my hands. I read until I could only see "in fuzz" before I forced myself to stop.
The Christmas Visitors is a charming story of twins from a Plain family who have a chance meeting in Cedar Creek with brothers of the same faith. All 4 are looking for answers in their faith, for partners, & a way to make their dreams come true. Each of the 4 contributes much to the story with their different gifts of talents.I have to say I liked them all.
Of course there is a bit of suspense and a lot of partaking of food. Oh My Gosh...the cookies and meals they prepared and ate! One could easily gain pounds just by reading this book!
The second story "Kissing The Bishop" by Charlotte Hubbard was maybe by a small margin my favorite. But so unique because this is a continuation of the first story but about different people in Cedar Creek (with a few of the same members of the first story appearing). This is an endearing story of 4 people in their later years hopeing for love. It also is about faith, life lessons, and the Christmas season. Oh and not to forget the food!!
A beautiful surprise at the end of the book is a section called "Sugar & Spice". It is 24 pages of all the cookies & bars, cakes & candies mentioned in both stories. Ms. Hubbard also invites the reader to check her website for more recipes she mentions in her other writings. She is a huge baker that has often baked more than 150 dozen cookies & bars in a season.. plus candies! She is sharing her tried & true recipes with the reader which is such a lovely Christmas gift from her.
Then there is just one last temptation after the "sweets". You are offered a teasing of another of Charlotte's new Christmas books, "Winter of Wishes".
I think I got more than I paid for when I picked this book up. Two lovely stories, recipes and a peek at the author's new story...What more does one need to get in the Christmas spirit? Book gets 5 stars from this reader.
