This is the first book that I've read of Michael Connelly's and I am completely hooked! His writing style gives enough twists and turns to keep you interested all the way to the last page.

Bosch becomes entangled in a double slaying that also impinges on his personal life and workplace. Well written...as always by Connelly.

The Harry Bosch formula seems to be:
- Start with a simple murder
- Layer in Harry's struggling (and often unrelated) personal relationships
- Throw in serious conflict between Harry and his police department superiors
- Complicate the murder threefold
- Tie it all together and package it up with a clever climax

Works for me.

A really great read. This is the second if his ooks I have read and find it even more fascinating. Fine character development which is often missing in crime and detective novels. The action never stops.

Detective Bosch is dealing with race riots, and a wife who isn't sure she wants to be a wife , besides all the politicts of LAPD when a cop is suspected of a murder. This is a thrill ride and a good read.

Powerful seems to be an inadequate word for this book. Michael Connellys stories are always complex studies of human nature. This book is particularly stark; life and death in LA seems to be ominous and frightening.

If no one has warned you before, it is very helpful to read the Bosch books in order. Harrys personal life changes over the course of these books. Connelly doesnt spend time recounting how Harry got to the position hes in; this book opens with Harry looking for his wife, Eleanor.

The author tries to offer some explanations for riots and hostile interactions between the races in this polyglot city. However, I came away with a feeling of hopelessness; the positions of the combatants are solidified and no one is really listening.

The police hierarchy and the political spin-doctors do whatever keeps them in power; they pay lip-service to the ideas of honesty and justice. Sadly, this seems to be a realistic view of life in todays American cities.

Between the gruesome close and the general timbre of this novel, this is not a cheery book. After reading this, however, I felt that I had a better grasp of the issues that create and maintain the tensions between the races and police. I also feel little hope for the future of large, multicultural cities.

Michael Connelly never disappoints. Harry Bosch is an imperfect man caught by his own demons, but he is very good at his job. The aspects of LA Michael Connelley brings to his books makes you want to go just to visit the areas and sights not on tourist maps. Highly recommended

Another good Harry Bosch book. Harry must solve a murder on the Angels Flight, a L.A. trolley where a local lawyer is killed. Unfortunately, the man had lots of enemies especially the LAPD, and Harry has to try to and keep the people from rioting during the investigation. And to make matters worse, Harry marriage is falling apart at the same time. Good book with a surprise ending.

Bosch reminds me of a film noir cop. He feels pain. His relationships fail. He smokes. He's got a history that you learn about with each installment. I'm eager to read the whole series.

Book Description
An activist attorney is killed in a cute little L.A. trolley called Angels Flight, far from Harry Bosch's Hollywood turf. But the case is so explosive--and the dead man's enemies inside the L.A.P.D. are so numerous--that it falls to Harry to solve it. Now the streets are superheating. Harry's year-old Vegas marriage is unraveling. And the hunt for a killer is leading Harry to another high-profile L.A. murder case, one where every cop had a motive. The question is, did any have the guts?

My Review
This is the best so far in a great series. Harry continues to solve the crimes but his personal life is once again falling apart. Lots of twists and excellent characters make for a real page turner. I'm looking forward to reading the next book as Connelly never disappoints. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Harry Bosch and also to anyone looking for a good book to read.

I love the character Harry Bosch, but this one was a little slow starting. It was interesting, however, to encounter Eleanor while they were married. I had only read about her in later books.

Harry's one year old marriage is crunbling and a high profile murder in a trolley called Angel's Flight leads harry to a suspects in LA's own police force. Good insite into Harry's past, his childhood and how this affected his life.

Suspenful story with lots of twists and turns. Harry Bosch, a detective in LA is given a high profile murder case that may involve dirty cops and for sure has race, political, and media problems. There is more than one person inside the investigation that is pulling strings and misdirecting things plus he uncovers a tie to another high profile murder case and proves the suposed killer is innocent.

The police have never liked Attorney Howard Elias who was constantly bringing cases against the Department. So when he is gunned down, there are a lot of suspects. Harry Bosch is assigned the case. He knows residents of the city may riot if the killer of the African American lawyer turns out to be a cop. As Harry, Kiz, and Edgar investigate, they go up against police bureaucrats who don't want this murder solved, and racial tension in the city of Angels. Harry also has to work with his nemesis, Internal Affairs Detective Chastain.

This is my favorite book in the series so far. Harry's marriage is imploding as he tries to piece together this case. He also gets involved in Howard Elias' latest civil rights case against the Department so we have two mysteries in this book. There are a lot of twists and turns in this story. I was actually surprised by the identity of the killer. My rating: 5 Stars.
