I missed this one as a child; decided to read it after seeing a PBS movie. Engaging and sometimes funny story of an orphan adopted by a brother/sister who live on a farm in Canada.
Read all of the series. Loved them.
From the back cover...
"The owners of Green Gables have a problem. They had asked for an orphan boy to help them with their farm chores. Somehow, the orphanage sent a girl instead -- a talkative redhead named Anne.
The owners decide to send Anne back to the orphanage as soon as possible. But the lively girl has an unusual effect on people. She seems to charm everyone - from a busybody neighbor to a handsome boy named Gilbert Blythe. And the longer Anne stays at Green Gables, the less anyone can remember what life was like without her."
