This was a fascinating story about a young orphan girl who has quite an imagination. Although she is unwanted by most people and runs her tongue on and on, she finds herself in the home of Green Gables owned by a brother and sister who adopt her. This is filled with tales of how she spends her first 6 years in Green Gables in the first place she can truly call her home. It was encased with stories of friendship, heartache, and growing up. I wanted to read this book series for years (and even owned it as a child but had never read it until now. . and I am 28). I'm so glad that I have been able to read it. I laughed, cried, and could quote a bunch of it since I grew up watching the mini-series.

I have always wanted to read this book and never had the chance until now. I am so glad I finally did. It's such a wonderful book -- you'll fall in love with the little orphan Anne (spelled with an "e") immediately. You can't help but to love her imagination and thoughts. This book that makes you smile, laugh and cry alittle is perfect for all ages!!

This is a classic! Montgomery's style will endear you to Anne as well as to Matthew and Marissa Cuthbert who adopt this rea headed orphan and give her a home and love. Anne is creative and ends up in much innocent mischief inspite her best efforts to do good. From coloring her hair to accidentally drinking too much cordial, she always seems to be in a mess, but generations can't help but love her. Great read aloud.

This is a hardcover and illustrated edition of the story of Anne of Green Gables, a red-headed, imaginative, fiery-tempered, and talkative orphan who longs to belong somewhere.

I've just re-read this in my quest to read the classics I missed and/or have forgotten, and am again enamoured with Anne. Just as she does in the story, the girl grabs your heart and you find yourself rooting for her though you know she'll do well without your help. I find myself remembering feeling the way she did at times, with her imagination and the adults around her finding her creativity but silliness. Dear to my heart, and I'll be (re)reading the rest of the series as well! Next up is Anne of Avonlea.

Any one who reads this book will become a kindred spirit. Anne is just one of the most exciting people in the world! She keeps you on your toes and cause you to really look at life and find the joy and love in it. And who doesn't want a Gilbert Blythe? Still a master piece after 200 years!

Oh, what a perfect novel! This book will always stand out in my memory as the first book that ever made me cry - and while hundreds of other books have brought me to tears since then, even in re-reading this book nothing makes me cry harder than this one! Re-reading this has given me such pleasure, that I think I will have to re-read the whole series! In fact, I don't know how far I ever made it in the series, I don't think I have read them all, to be honest. I am looking forward to this project! This book just fills me with such joy! What a perfect delight it has been to re-acquaint myself with Anne Shirley.

This book is a great read for an upcoming teen or tweener interested in life at the turn of the century but its appeal crosses all generations and genders. Equally as good as the Disney real-life portrayal of this 20th century gem!

A amazingly written book, with a different style that will leave you reaching for more. A wonderful prequel too called Before Green Gables, tells the story before Anne meets her permeant family.

Somehow, I missed this series in its entirety (never read it, never watched the many version of it, no plays, etc.) growing up. But I know by now the fine work the folks at Post Hypnotic Press do. So I gave it a try. And I was charmed. In fact, if I was ever a cleaned mouthed, less jaded person, I think I may have been much like Anne. I can be distracted by beetles, I have a tendency to be blunt, and I love the realm of fantasy. Anne is a little heavier on the romance in her likes, but I am sure she and I could be friends.

While it is obvious that the book is set in the early 1900s, with the proper roles of women (like women dont have the legal right to vote), church is a mandatory weekly occurrence, and there was one remark about letting strangers in the house that could be construed as racist (against Italians, which seemed odd to me), these few negatives are balanced out by Annes huge imagination, and the trouble she gets into. This novel spans several years of Annes life, so there are plenty of humorous events to enjoy. Anne hates her red hair, and attempts to dye it black. But it comes out this muddled green. So, they have to shave it off. Haha! I found this pretty humorous, and part of it was because of the location and times. In todays day, green hair, or a bald head isnt so unusual. But for 1909 Canada, wellI expect it was the talk of the village for at least a week.

Besides the humor, there are also scenes of more seriousness that give this tale a weight that many childrens books lack. Anne was an orphan and spent time in several homes before coming to the Cuthberts. Most often, she was set right to work taking care of the children and hence wasnt allowed to be a child herself, to go to school, or attend social events. On one house, she had to contend with an alcoholic. While much of Annes life before the Cuthberts was merely alluded to, there was enough there to let the life experienced reader fill in the gaps.

All in all, I enjoyed this book more than I expected. I found it a good mix of magical innocence of growing up in the countryside and remembered hardship of starting off an orphan. Annes lasting friendships with the people of Avonlea were also quite touching.

This is my all time favorite book, I am only posting it because i duplicate copies. It is wonderful story of an orphan girl who is sent to an elderly brother and sister, who were expecting a boy. This book goes through the first couple of years after anne arrives on PEI. It is humourus, touching and heartwarming. It is a great book for a young girl to read, and you should also read the 7 sequels.

Anne (spelt with an e) arrived at Green Gables as an orphan. The Bachelor ( Matthew) and his sister, (Marilla) who was an old maid had asked that the orphanage send a boy to help on the farm.

Anne talked constantly and day dreamed and that was the last thing this couple wanted. Anne was always getting into trouble because of her day dreaming.

Did the couple keep her or send her back? Well, you will have to read the story to get the answer to this.

Since I adopted two boys I found the book intersting.

Marilla Cuthbert and her brother, Matthew, decide that they are getting old and need help with the farm. They make arrangements to adopt a boy who is old enough to help with the chores and can be taught how to take care of the farm by Matthew. But the train doesn't drop off a boy. Anne, an eleven-year-old, red-headed orphan, is sitting at the train depot, waiting for the Cuthberts to take her home.

Every year I try to fit in a couple of classics that I never got to read when I was in school. I saw the audiobook of this book and decided to give it a try. Anne is a very dramatic kid. I couldn't help smiling at some of the things she said. I can see why the Cuthberts decided not to send her back to the orphanage. She definitely grows on you.

This was a full-cast recording with different actors for each voice. I loved it! It was so easy to figure out who was talking. I also loved the surround-sound. You could hear horses clomping, birds singing, crickets chirping...it added so much to the story. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

Anne of Green Gables was one of the few classics that I did not read as a young student. Just did not interest me. I have Netflix now and a good friend of mine suggested that I watch the series "Anne With An E". "You must watch this" she said. So I reluctantly did.
What a wonderful treat! I so enjoyed the first Season and am anxiously awaiting Season #2. So of course, I now had to read the book! This book is so beautifully written and I can actually see Anne as I devour each page. I don't often laugh out loud as I am reading a book, but with this wonderful novel i do. Every predicament that Anne gets in, and out of, is a joy to read. L.M. Montgomery wrote eight novels about Anne, following her life for many years. I have ordered all eight of the books in the Anne series through PBS and am looking forward to enjoying them all.
