I recently picked up his series " saga of the first king". I was wondering if it is ok to read this series by itself or do I need to start with one of his others?

Yes, Salvatore is great! Check out the Drizzt series.

I agree!  If the Saga of the First King didn't start with the Highwayman, you might want to read that first.  It is a stand alone series so enjoy!  There is a loose relation to his Demon Wars series so I'd recommend reading that afterwards.

I agree with Nat, read his Drizzt series, it's very good.
