Decidedly not a Spencer novel, this first book in a new series, however, shows Robert B. Parker's typical sparce writing style, his appealing characters, and wonderful story telling ability. You do not have to be a fan of westerns to enjoy the antics of the two very different main characters as they begin to bring a bit of law and order to a lawless small town.

Predictable but a good very easy read for a couple of days. I'll wait for the movie to come out on DVD.

Parker in the Wild West!! All the adventure of a Spenser book, but set in the Old West.
One of my husbands favorites.

A western with the same great dialog that Parker uses in the Spenser novels.
This a great book and reads fast. I saw the movie and the dialog was much like the book. I've read all four of the Virgil Cole, Evertt Hitch books and I hope Mr Parker will continue these. Fact is, I'm going to reread all of them.

This series has 4 books to it. Excellent story and writing. Had a hard time puting this book down but it an excellent read. Virgil and Everett make a good team. Some funny lines all thru the book. The movie is good too.
Spencer and Hawk on horseback. A fun read. It really saddens me that Parker only wrote three of these.
Really cool book. Typical RB Parker and if you love his Spenser books, this will be a winner for you. Hes a spare storyteller and this book flows quickly and easily without a bunch of words that arent necessary. Im looking forward to the next book in this series and cant wait to see where Parker takes Virgil and Everett.
I am not a fan of westerns, but I really like the author, so I thought I would give it a try. I thought it was a very good read. The characters were interesting and the plot moved along well. I would recommend it to friends that are fans of the genre, but I would probably steer others to different Parker books.
These Parker Westerns are the best of the breed. He should have written in this genre from the beginning! Great characters and great dialog delivered in good humor.

This is not your typical Bang-Bang shoot 'em up Western! It has all the drama of a shoot-out at the OK Corral, yes; but more than the 'what' you also learn the 'why.' The novel is also a New York Times best seller.
Author Robert B. Parker also writes the extremely popular detective series featuring Spencer, with titles like COLD SERVICE, BAD BUSINESS, HUSH MONEY and WIDOW'S WALK.
From back cover: When Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch arrive in Appaloosa, they find a town suffering at the hands of a renegade rancher who's already left the city marshal and one of his deputies dead. Cole and Hitch are used to cleaning up after scavengers, but this one raises the stakes by playing not with the rules---but with emotion.

I saw the movie first and was compelled to read the bok after the fact. I was surprised at how closely the movie followed the booK--at time even quoting text exactly. It was an easy read that was well written with plenty of action involved.

A really good classic Western. Now a movie.
Again I've been reading everything Parker has written since he was a pup.
Very enjoyable. It was certainly different as it took place in the Old West but having read Robert Parker before, I took a gamble on it and it paid off.

Good western novel from the Spencer author.
Another surprising Western from Robert Parker. Spenser with a six gun, chaps and big hat. Wonderful
A GREAT read from the author who brought you the Spencer series - a Western that shows his skill runs the gauntlet!
The town is Appaloosa; the newcomers are Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch and they've come to clean the town up - if they don't get themselves killed!

Two good guys win against injustice and malice, with a quirk ending.
Great western!
A good western but, very different
Simple western story, quick read. A nice book to read when you don't want to get to involved in a more complex book.

This was a different take from the normal Robert Parker books. It reminded me of the TV show Deadwood.

If you like your western heroes to be terse, then you'll really like Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch.
