Arctic Drift - Dirk Pitt, Bk 20
Author: Clive Cussler, Dirk Cussler
As with all Clive Cussler's dazzling Dirk Pitt novels, critics said Treasure of Khan amazes, informs and entertains (Publishers Weekly), the action zipping along until a final powerhouse showdown (Entertainment Weekly). Well, I quite enjoyed this latest Cussler novel! As in all of his books, it was a page-turning adventure. In this one, Dirk Pitt and NUMA save the world from an evil Canadian energy mogul and along the way find a way to stop global warming! As usual the events were somewhat far-fetched and included the usual coincidences but it was full of action and interesting ideas. I also really found interesting the information about Franklin's lost expedition in the 1840's in search of the Northwest Passage. I always learn something new when I read Cussler's novels.

This Dirk Pitt story, while it is entertaining, does not have the same zing as when Clive Cussler wrote by himself. Clive is slowing down or Dirk Cussler (son) is diluting the action. Dirk Pitt and Clive Cussler ARE aging (aren't we all) and maybe that is what I notice. The general tone of the story relating to "global warming" tends to be a little preachy with a highly imaginative "solution" that is put forth. All in all, this one has the good guys and the bad guys and a good story line. Just no excitement.

Another mission impossible story

Dirk Pitt is now NUMA Director, and his 2 kids are now in on the action. This is pure action / adventure / excitement, and pure Cussler. If you're a fan, you'll know what I mean.
