This historical fantasy has two interlaced plotlines. In the "historical" plotline, the poet Ariosto deals with political intrigue involving the family of English martyr Sir Thomas More. The other plotline happens in Ariosto's imaginanation, in which he is a great hero and military adviser to the Cerocchi (i.e., Cherokee) people who rule much of the New World. Both the historical setting and the alternate world are well drawn, and Ariosto makes for a hero in the true Renaissance spirit.
