I am a sucker for dogs, and especially books where we have some insight into what a dog thinks, and this book is that and more. The narrator is Enzo, the most loyal and wonderful dog, and the book deals with his devotion to his owner, Denny. Denny is a race car driver who not only has perfected the "Art of Racing in the Rain" but also has shown how that ability is also a life philosophy. It's a beautiful, touching book that I recommend.

It has been a while since I have read a book that made me stop, think, and just relish the reading. Oh, and made me get the tissue. This was the book.

To put it simply, this is the tale of Enzo, the dog, who was adopted by a family. The family includes Denny, Eve, and little Zoe. Denny, a race car driver, is Enzo's primary "person" and caretaker.

Life through the eyes of Enzo is funny, sad, scary, and ultimately rewarding. There are several plot twists in the novel and I don't want to give them away (although, I think the book would have been just fine without one of the major ones).

You do not need to like racing or even like dogs to enjoy this touching, absorbing, amazing book. If I ever get a dog, I want one just like Enzo. Two barks! (You will know what that means if you read it!)

I found this book amazing and truly enjoyed reading it. Because it was written from a dog's perspective, I found it unique and so interesting. You can't help falling in love with Enzo (the dog)and his family. This is not a funny, happy story like the Marley book, but rather a story about the life of Enzo's owner, which was quite sad and difficult at times. There's a lot written about car racing and most of these references were used as metaphors about life. Sometimes the racing information was a bit much for me, but I still loved the story.

This is a story about one man's hardships and how he overcame the obstacles in his life. I could not put this book down and fell head over heels in love with Enzo and his family. I highly recommend this book.

I started reading this book on a sunday afternoon around 4pm and couldn't put it down until around 7pm. I read it from start to finish (in between potty breaks). I LOVED this book.

I was crying by page 4, laughing by page 25 and crying again by page 100. You LOVE this dog and the thoughts he has of his surroundings and his human companions and one angry zebra. :)

I read this book in two sittings, and it is now one of my favorite fiction books. The narrator is a dog who who hopes to one day become a man, despite bearing witness to the cruelties that people can inflict on one another. He realizes and shows the reader through the story he tells that although things can look hopeless love, determination, and loyalty can often set things right.

Clearly this book will appeal to dog lovers, but hopefully this book will find wider appeal. This book would also appeal to fans of Jodi Picoult because of a controversial subplot. Men will appreciate the descriptions of car races and references to famous drivers. This book will take you through emotional highs and lows. Any lover of engrossing fiction should be as happy to go along for the ride that Garth Stein offers as would the canine narrator Enzo in his master's race car.

I hate to be the lone dissenter, but here goes. I love dogs. I love books about dogs. Did not enjoy this book at all. It is emotionally manipulative; plot lines are contrived and not believable (and I'm not talking about the suspension of disbelief at the end...I was actually ok with that piece). There was just not one thing in this book that rang true for me. I'm ok with sad books. But there's a difference between poignant and heartwrenching. It is possible to write a book that is very moving without being maudlin or manipulative. This author didn't hit that note for me.

That being said, there was a kernal of a good story here to be told. The author needed a good story editor (or perhaps he needed to stop listening to a bad story editor). It could have been told in a way that was much more believable and certainly more subtle. Also, I could have lived without the car-racing minutiae. While I'm not a fan, I can read about and appreciate things I don't generally find interesting if it is presented in an engaging way. This was not. It was like a friend who becomes obsessed with something and proceeds to bore you by talking about nothing but the "thing".

In closing, if you love car-racing, and you're a fan of books that drag your heart through the mud by any means readily available, you may enjoy it. Many did.

I LOVED this book. I fell in love with it from the first page when I realized it was written from the point of view of the dog!! I am so head over heels in love with my dog and often wonder what he is thinking. Now thanks to this book I now wonder how Cam would tell my story. What would he have to say about our life together?

The Art of Racing in the Rain is written from Enzo's perspective. Enzo is Denny's dog. It tells the story of how Eve, Denny's wife, enters the picture. It tells the story of how their daughter Zoe joins the family. It tells the story of Eve's tragic and unexpected death. And it tells the story of how Denny fights for his family all through Enzo's eyes.

You are probably wondering where the title comes from. Denny is a race car driver. Not like NASCAR race car, but like fancy Italian cars racing. Enzo has learned a lot about racing from Denny and watching races with Denny, and even riding in the race car with Denny.

Oh and did I mention that Enzo likes TV and learned on a documentary that when dogs die they come back as a man? And Enzo can not wait to come back as a man!

I laughed, I cried, I flew through this book. I give it 5 out of 5 stars! A great read!!

Touching tale of one man's ruin and redemption, as told from the perspective of the family dog. Though some parts of the plot are predictable--if not unbelievable--and the pages about racing are somewhat of a bore (if you're not into that sort of thing), the book still manages to hold its own with the right mix of triumph and tragedy. While the ending is a bit cliched and wraps up too quickly for my own taste, the book interested me enough that I finished it in four hours...and cried like a baby when I did.

** This is probably a book you should avoid if you have recently been through the death of a pet. Without giving anything away, let me just say that it's emotionally charging for any animal lover, but may be more difficult to read if you've recently lost a pet.

I knew by the end of the first chapter that this was a very special book, and I read a LOT of books. I read a lot of VERY GOOD books. But it is exceedingly rare when I am so deeply moved. Feeling my emotions so wonderfully affected by an author's words is the greatest compliment I can give. The endorphin rush I felt when I finished this novel was a pure feeling of bliss. Only once or twice a year do I ever read anything even close! My heart clutched with sadness, it soared with triumph, and it basked in joy. I give this my very highest recommendation. Read this book!

I'm not a big fan of talking animal stories. Give me the original narrated version of The Incredible Journey over the cutesy talking-animal version any day. (The first makes me cry; the second makes me barf.)

This book I loved. And I cried at the bittersweet ending. As a character who doesn't always understand what his people are doing (and sometimes understands better than they do), Enzo relates the story with compassion, understanding, and sometimes even acceptance of the unfairness of life. An exceptional book that's a deceptively easy read.

Usually I do not like books where the main character is an animal. I always feel the author is trying to hard to be sentimental and make us cry. I loved "The Art Of Racing In The Rain"! "Enzo" is among the most charming characters in literature. His insights into the human psyche are hilarious as they are ingenious; gut-wrenching as they are heartwarming. "Enzo" will make you think at every page. Bravo Garth Stein!

One of my favorite books- ever! I love that the story is being told by Enzo (the dog). Everything is seen from his point of view. I am also a huge race fan and my husband also used to be a race car driver and let me tell you that all the racing references that are made in this book are accurate and true. You can tell that Stein did a lot of research writing this book. I met Patrick Dempsey in May of 2009 and I learned that he is going to play Denny Swift's character in the movie version of this book. I can't wait!

I LOVED this book. It's completely unique because the story of family life is told through the eyes of the family dog Enzo. The fact that Enzo doesn't always understand what is happening around him (even though the reader does) makes him all the more endearing.

On the last night of his life Enzo is taking stock of all that he saw and hoping he was a good dog so that he'd be granted his dearest wish...to be reincarnated as a human. The book moves along at just the right pace and there were parts that had me laughing out loud, followed by parts that had me pretty much bawling my eyes out.

Stein definitely has a flair for storytelling. Pick this one up!

I was reluctant to read this book, but it was a pick of one of the members in my book club. Reading a book narrated by a dog, seemed it would be a little odd and I am not really into race car driving. Loved this book! It was quite sad, but filled with insights and acknowledgment of the complexities of the human experience. There were also moments that made me smile, even laugh. At times, Enzo, the dog, had far better clarity than I may have had in similar situations. I found it to be a fast read and even learned something about race car driving. This book is one I definitely recommend.

Could not put this book down. Garth Stein did a superb job of narrating from a dog's perspective.

This book made me really think...and that's a by product of a truly great read.

Charming, sad - made me cry in some parts, but also made me give extra lovies to my own best friend. :o)

The last scene in this book stopped me from giving it another star. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this book. I listened to it on CD, and the reader had a wonderful voice for a dog which may have added to my enjoyment. The character of Enzo is great - cranky, affectionate, and wise. The chapters in which the author allows Enzo to discuss parallels between the way race car drivers handle their cars on the track and how people handle their lives are little gems. But the author brought my good feeling crashing down with the heavy-handed final chapter which was simply not necessary.

So when you hear that this book has been written from a dog's perspective, you've got to be thinking that there is the potential for it to be pretty cheesy or dumb or badly written. I was VERY pleasantly surprised by this book. I LOVED IT.

It's not too uncommon of a story: guy meets girl, they get married, she gets sick, etc, etc, but the way this was put together and shown through Enzo's eyes is really wonderful. I read a lot of books and this is definitely one of the best I've read in a long time, very deserving of my 5-star rating. I've passed it on to two other readers since I finished, which is really the biggest stamp of approval I can convey.

An absolutely entertaining and engaging story of man's best friend's quest to be the best dog he can be while preparing to become a man, just like his human, in his next life. Captures the essence of a dog and its many expressions and actions, leaving you wondering how accurate the description is when considering your own four-legged friend.I was moved from laughter, to anger, to tears throughout. The ending brings much needed closure and begs for your to continue the story using your own imagination, and fight through the tears just as this family had done.

Enzo is one of the most lovable and loving characters in fiction. This book's theme of "keeping your eyes on the road" no matter what, told from a dog's point of view, is as powerful as they say. Enzo's loyalty to his master through a variety of pretty serious trials and tribulations had me reaching for the tissues as well. This is a wonderful book. I am a dog lover, but I am hesitant about reading "dog stories" because so often they seem to wind up being sad and I do not enjoy that. This story is told by the dog, from his doggie perspective. He is a wise, loving, loyal, endearing being. There are some sad things, but there is humor (I found myself laughing out loud at times), and wisdom, trials and triumphs. It will make you think about your humanity and rethink your views on man's best friend. Once I picked it up, I did not want to put it down. A thoroughly enjoyable read all the way through!

Fans of Marley and Me will really appreciate this book in that it uses the only constant in the character's lives--the family dog-- to give you a glimpse into the lives of a young couple as they go through some growing pains and very trying times. That said, there the similarity ends. This book is through the point of view of the dog, and from the very first three pages you KNOW that before the end at least two characters will die. Then, of course, you get to know and care about them.

Thank goodness that the driver is so optimistic and engaging because there's a LOT of rain to be had. It's dark, but it's an enjoyable ride that has you engaged reading long past your bedtime. It's an easy-read too so it's not like you're slogging through paragraphs of description to get to the good parts.

The racing metaphors are accessible even for someone who doesn't know a thing about cars, like myself. Thank goodness, because there are a lot of them! If you love dogs, or even just cars you will appreciate this book more, but you don't have to love either to read it.

There is a lot of adult themes, so I would read it first before giving it to a teen so you can judge how appropriate it is for that particular teen. I wouldn't recommend to ANYONE under 13 or 14, because the parts I'm thinking about go beyond just sex and I don't want to include any spoilers.

I gave it 4.5 stars because it's GREAT but parts are very predictable. That said, it does so in a way that fits extremely well with the theme "where the eyes go, the car goes" so I can't say that it is unintentional or "wrong."

I loved the point of view of the dog Enzo that was creative and interesting, being a dog person. The race car stuff was interesting too, as it was a world i am not familiar with and found it very cool. The family things were okay, however I would have much preferred to have more of the dog's adventures and less of the 'twins'. I am glad i read it, as it will stay with me, as I look at my dog, I will wonder if he is thinking and would like to say.

I liked this book. It's not just for dog lovers although pet owners will get a kick out of how dogs see us. This story is told completely from the perspective of a well-loved older dog. He is nearing the end of his life and his burning desire is to be born a human and he thinks he knows how to make it happen. He understands human speech though he can't talk of course. He's an intelligent dog with a pretty funny sense of humor. He's also a realist who takes life as it comes.

The sections in the book about car racing really didn't catch my interest for I'm not a NASCAR fan. Thankfully there aren't too many sections about car racing. The main story is the conflict between the dog's owner and his wife's rich parents. That tug of war over the granddaughter was heartbreaking and so realistic. I've known grandparents like that. The ending was sweet and a good payoff for all that happened. The ending brought the story full circle. It leaves you with hope.

My husband brought this one home, and told me I had to read it - the whole voice of the dog thing didn't really appeal to me. Then, I read it. Not only did I read it, I devoured it. I will never look at my dog in the same light again. Wonderful read!

This is a most unusual book, as it is told from the point of view of a dog. It isnt silly or whimsical like one might think, but a very wise and interesting book. Im not a fan of automobile racing but even that became interesting, through the eyes of Enzo. It is indeed heart-wrenching at times, but is so beautifully written that the joy of reading it is worth any pain the reader might experience. Theological differences aside, I truly loved this book. I started reading it when I received the hardback through PBS, and immediately knew I wouldnt want to put it down, so I ordered it on my Kindle. (I cant read hardbacks in bed, where I do most of my reading, do to arthritis) I am not a fast reader, but I read this in less than four nights of bedtime reading. This one is a keeper. I highly recommend it, whether you are a dog or racing lover or not.

This book is amazing. It is told from the dog's point of view and follows the life of a young man as he meets his wife, falls in love, has a child and then deals with the wife's serious illness. I found myself crying out loud, laughing out loud, and jumping up to read paragraphs to my husband that I felt were too great not to share! This book will stick with you and I find myself still thinking about it months later. It makes you reassess what is really important in life and how much meaning can be conveyed without words. Excellent!!

Wonderful wonderful book!! My husband got mad at me because I kept the lamp on late into the night because I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. I will not pretend that it is a sappy, whimsical story about a pet, but it is heartwarming, tear-jerking at times, and absolutely worth reading. Enzo is a philosopher, car racing enthusiast, and beloved family pet. In his final days, he tells us his reflection on his life and what he has learned. There have been difficult moments over the years in Enzo's family, but he has remained a faithful friend and protector. It is so refreshing to see the world through the eyes of a loving, innocent, and goofy dog. So pull out some tissues, and read this book!

First of all, the initial description of the book that I read said NOTHING about this being heart-wrenching or a tear-jerker. If it had, I would have better prepared myself for this book.

It was a beautiful story that made me happy, sad, angry. I laughed at a few parts, but mostly, this was a very melancholy tale. Enzo was an amazingly smart dog and living life through his eyes made me wonder (even more than I previously did) what goes through my dog's head most days.

I loved and hated Enzo's family. It was so sweet and very believable how much Denny loved his dog, because I love my dog that much and I'm not even a 'dog' person! And the things Denny went through... Ugh there were a few times when I wanted to punch Denny, but mostly I wanted to do bodily harm to his wife and in-laws. And somehow, even though he was only a dog, Enzo usually ended up saving the day.

As mad as I was to read the opening paragraphs and find out that this was not a whimsical tale of life through a dog's eyes, but the flash back of his life during his last days (which they warn you about in the description on the back of the book so this is NOT technically a spoiler) I could not put this book down. I ended up taking it to the beach and sitting under an umbrella next to my hubby, I finished it. I was bawling. If you read this, keep tissues or a hanky with you! But you should read this.

If dogs could talk....oh the stories they could tell. Don't you sometimes wish you knew what your pet was thinking....whether or not the understand what you are saying? This book shows you that perhaps they understand more than we think they do.

This book was full of emotions...drama, but the chapters are short and I really enjoyed it.

My opinion of this book is clearly in the minority. It is a simple tale told through the eyes of a dog. The dog had my heart as I am a dog lover but the story is way too predictable and the writing is simple. Within the story there are constant analogies comparing the struggle of life to race car driving. I did not like those parts at all.
I love books that either enlighten me in some way, teach me something about a bit of history I am unaware of or keep me guessing what is coming next. I like to be kept interested! This book did none of those things for me. It attempts to tug at the heartstrings (and succeeds a little) but not enough for me to give it more than 3 stars.

Interesting technique of storytelling about a family from the dog's point of view addressing issues like letting go of those we love, the importance of listening, and being lost in the moment/completely present to be successful at difficult tasks. I liked the characters but hated the situations they were in. If you're looking for a cry, this will afford you that opportunity.

This book was a touching rendition of life through the eyes of a dog. Definitely get your tissues ready if you are prone to crying while reading books (like me). A truly amazing novel! I think it goes down as one of my favorites. This book reinforced so many things I already believe about the human/pet relationship, and about how to make life meaningful. I absolutely loved the theme of reincarnation and the idea that we make our own destiny. (The car goes where your eyes go. That which you manifest is before you.) Through his simple prose, Stein has created a profoundly moving treatise on the human soul. It also happens to be a very heartwarming story about how a dog helps a family overcome tragedy. Read it!

I read some of the reviews and had to laugh because someone thought the dog really took the witness stand in court...um, no, he was imagining the entire scenario! But this is exactly what endears you to Enzo. He's a dog, with a strong will to be reincarnated as a human. And Enzo would really succeed at being human because he knows how to listen...and observe. But oh what he would give for opposable thumbs and a tongue that would allow him to speak...then he would be able to solve Denny's problems.

The Art of Racing in The Rain will make you run the spectrum of emotions as Enzo narrates his family's trials and triumphs. If you are a dog person, I can pretty much guarantee he will be the recipient of at least one hug/treat thanks to Enzo's endaring nature. Oh what a world we would live in if we all could be as loyal and thoughtful as Enzo. Bark! Bark!

On the eve of his death, Enzo, a dog with a very human soul and a desire for opposable thumbs, takes stock of his life and the people in it. We see and feel the events of his owner's life as only a dog could feel them. We feel the rush as Denny, Enzo's race car driver owner, takes him on a "hot lap"; learn the intricacies of racing through the things Denny tells Enzo; feel the pain of watching a mistress die and an owner grieve and the confusion and sorrow of seeing the people you love go through a battle for custody of a child.

The author never varies from his canine viewpoint but somehow, through the sweet, gentle soul of a dog we learn about racing, and love, and life.

Anyone who has loved a dog will like this book, and may look a bit differently at their pets after reading it.

bollini avatar reviewed The Art of Racing in the Rain on
The Art of Racing in the Rain caught my eye initially through a newsletter or recommendation on PaperbackSwap.com. The story is told by Enzo, the faithful and loving, but very old, dog of a semi-professional race car driver. Like I said Enzo is old and is very close to dying, but this is okay to him as he fully believes that a dogs next step in the living cycle is to come back as a man, and Enzo desperately longs for thumbs. He is convinced of this return to the world as a human from documentaries that he watches through the day when his master is at work.

So Enzo narrates the story of his masters life, Denny, that he has had the privilege to experience. It is a gut-wrenching story of Dennys wife getting sick and ultimately dying, of Denny having his only daughter stripped from him by his (possibly well-meaning, but very manipulative) parents-in-law. The fight to recapture and rebuild what he can of his family, all while juggling work and his other love, racing. Intermixed though the story are tales of racing, Denny and Enzos many hours spent watch racing videos (both of Denny and of professional races), Dennys wisdom in racing situations and how that same wisdom can translate into real-life situations so easily and appropriately.

This book really hooked me in with so many connections. The love of dogs, as a father of kids about the same age as Zoë, Dennys daughter, and the racing wisdom really spoke to an inner me. I have raced cars, and while a back condition has kept me from the track for several years now, I still hold on to the possibility that I can climb back into my Formula Ford soon. Garth Steins ability to take these track sayings, sayings that I used to hear or even use, and cast them over life itself was remarkable. I feel that I learned about myself, how my mind operates, through the experiences, example, and thoughts of Denny. For an author, that I am presuming does not have racing experience, to weave that world into the book in a way that I learn about myselfgifted writing.

Sayings like No race has even been won in the first corner but plenty of races have been lost there. Showing how being aggressive, launching hard (even showing off) early, or being so wrapped up in the excitement of the start of the event, can yield disastrous results, especially in an endurance race. Or Your car goes where your eyes go. A truism that is translated to life several times by both Enzo and Denny as, That which we manifest is before us. Even talking about the selfishness of a racer and then seeing those same examples in me. These are connections that the non-racer may not be as impacted by, and as such, may not have the same love and respect of this story as I have. I would be interested in others thoughts as they read these in the book and if you experience similar understanding or impact.

The other reason that I like this book so much was how Garth Stein was able to take a situation like a dog dying (served up to us on page 2), and then get the reader so wrapped up in the story that when Enzo does actually die, it feels shocking! It is a tear-jerker that you forget about as you are reading and when it does finally happen, the author is still able to draw out that much emotion from the reader.

When I was reading this book, I immediately wanted to give it to my father. He had done some racing of various kinds in the past (and with me), and I thought that he would connect in a similar way as I did. He is also a serious dog-lover, and I thought that the connection to Enzo would be strong. As I was finishing the book though, one of his dogs died, and suddenly. I debated actually giving it to him, torn between the thought of pouring orange juice on an open wound or could the book offering some healing and happiness to the situation, as you really end up loving Enzo and I felt that Enzo was going to get what he believed was coming to him.

In the end, I did give him the book, but it took almost a year for him to start on it. Once he did, he was hooked in the same way I was. Ultimately, while hard with his own dog's passing, he did say that is was beneficial and wished that he had started on it earlier.

I am sided on how I feel about this book. Part of me liked it while another part of me was a bit disappointed. I didn't like the ending which I found to be very abrupt. There were a few places in the book that I found humorous, but the overall story line was a little boring to follow. I don't really care for racing, so maybe that was my problem with this book. There were many mentions of races and explanations of racing, so I just had to skim over those pages. The racing aspect does blend in with the story line, but maybe that was my overall issue with the book. Perhaps if I was a race car fan, I would have liked it more. I give it 3.5 stars, but that is almost being generous. However, I'm glad I read it & it was a quick read.

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein was recommended to me by a very good friend and is nothing at all like the books I normally read. For starters, the narrator of the book is a dog named Enzo and the story is told entirely from his perspective. Its given me a whole new insight on animals and what they are really thinking and how they feel and the fact that they understand so much more than we give them credit for.

The story begins on the eve of Enzos death. Hes an old dog, you see, and as we all have done and will do, hes reflecting back on his life with his master, Denny, a race car driver and his family. Enzos view of the world is very funny and thought provoking. Enzo shares with us his love of television and watching car races as well as a documentary that people in Mongolia believe when a dog passes from this life, he will be reincarnated as a human. Enzo is very clear that his ultimate dream is to come back as a man, find Denny and shake his hand.

Through Enzos eyes, we are introduced to Dennys future wife, Eve and meet their daughter Zoe. With Enzos help, I learned more about racing cars than I ever did. Most importantly, we learn from Enzo exactly how loyal a dog is to his pack master and the love he feels for his entire pack. When Denny faces the ultimate adversity, we see it through Enzos eyes and feel his helplessness that he cant fix it. You cant help but love Enzo. While reading this book, I wished he were with me several times so I could hug him.

This book will make you smile, laugh and cry. This book will make you angry (I absolutely hated the twins and if I had been Enzo, I would have bit them). For me, only a book that truly speaks to my heart is capable of bringing out so many emotions when I read it and The Art of Racing in the Rain did that and more. Get this book, but dont just read itsavor it. Life is short and Enzo showed me how important it is to make every moment count.

I wasn't too sure I would like this book when I started it, because it is told from the dog's point of view, and I'm not usually a fan of anthropomorphism in this degree. But except for a few iffy places, once you accept the narrator, the story progresses smoothly and is quite easy to read and compelling - I finished this in one day. Enzo tells the story of his master Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver, and the challenges he faces when his wife dies and he has to fight her parents for custody of his daughter. Throughout of course we are treated to Enzo's view of life, dogs and humans; and his quiet philosophy, loyalty and love are the rock on which this book settles. It's a simple story, told from an unusual point of view, very sweet and thoroughly enjoyable.

I really loved the story from the dog's perspective. I've always wondered what dogs were thinking and I believe they DO understand what we say when we talk to them. The dog in this story is easy to fall in love with and I found myself doing just that. He was a perfect companion to Denny's character and I loved their bond.

There were a couple plot twists that I didn't expect but I liked them...kept the story intriguing. I definitely recommend this book if you are a dog lover!

It's an understatement to say this book is excellent. Wow! Read it in one afternoon. Could not put down. Don't we all wonder what an animal thinks & if only they could talk. This story tells us those answers as it written from the dog's mind. This dog, has soul, that we only wish we had. Don't miss reading this one. A book I intend to keep in my library. I intend to share with my book club & I am sure everyone will rate it a five!!!

I loved this book! I was very dubious, to be honest, despite the great reviews I'd read... I simply doubted whether I could really get into a story told from a dog's perspective. I started one night figuring I'd give it one chapter to decide... and I couldn't put it down! I read the whole thing in about four or five hours and laughed and cried through it. Terrific book!

Being an animal lover and also getting a recommendation from my dad, I had high expectations for this book. Maybe that was the problem to begin with. I started it with much anticipation and as I was reading my large grin implanted on my face started to falter. I really wasn't enjoying it but I had to keep on. Which I'm glad I did because I ended up liking it for most part. The book is done by the family dog's point of view. Which most of the time was cute. A lot of the book was done around racing as well. I guess this is a big place where this book fell short for me. Especially in the beginning. I'm not a race fan and don't care for it at all but that's what was talked about throughout most of the book. Sometimes it was okay when they gave little snip-its of racing quotes or thoughts but sometimes it seemed to go on and on which quite bored me. There were some funny parts (like the evil zebra, eating peppers for the twins, etc) but for most part the book was just okay for me.

I cried so much through the ending of this book I could hardly read it. That's because Enzo, a dog and the narrator, is a character the reader grows to love and respect. I know what he's talking about, I have 3 dogs. This book makes you want to just hug your dogs, look into their eyes and ask, "What are you thinking?"

If you love road racing, dogs, and stories that read realistically, beautifully and are contemporary then you will love this book. It was nothing short of breathtaking. My advice though, do not read the last chapter. It kind of makes the book feel like a "hollywood ending" took over at the editor's desk. The book ends perfectly if the last word you read is "Faster" and you DON'T read the 3 page last chapter titled "Imola, Italy". Read it, and I assure you, you'll regret having done so.

This novel is an amazing insight upon the life of man, his family, and his journey through life from the eyes of his best friend: his pet dog, Enzo. Stories are often written to shed light on a forgotten or overlooked perspective. This novel is a masterpiece which skillfully and gracefully allows the reader to see the world as Enzo does. To see and listen to events in the world, the day to day life of a man and his family, without the ability to communicate as effectively as his master. The love expressed by all parties is exquisite and pure. A relationship between a human and dog has never been so realistically illustrated or humanly portrayed. This novel will give you strength when you need it most, break your heart when you least expect it, and bring joyful tears with laughter and smiles. Enzo and Dennis master the art of racing in the rain, side by side, man and dog, friend and friend.

This is a heart warming story of one family, as told by the family dog, Enzo. Enzo tells about his life; from his first memories of puppyhood on a farm as just one of many puppies for sale, to his owner finding love, marrying a woman that makes the dog a little jealous, to the birth of their daughter whom Enzo protects. Reading it makes you ponder if your family pet loves you as much as Enzo loves his family. It also makes you consider leaving the TV on all day long for the entertainment of the pets. This was an easy read but keep in mind that a dog's life span is rather short. You just may shed a tear or two.

From Publishers Weekly
If you've ever wondered what your dog is thinking, Stein's third novel offers an answer. Enzo is a lab terrier mix plucked from a farm outside Seattle to ride shotgun with race car driver Denny Swift as he pursues success on the track and off. Denny meets and marries Eve, has a daughter, Zoë, and risks his savings and his life to make it on the professional racing circuit. Enzo, frustrated by his inability to speak and his lack of opposable thumbs, watches Denny's old racing videos, coins koanlike aphorisms that apply to both driving and life, and hopes for the day when his life as a dog will be over and he can be reborn a man. When Denny hits an extended rough patch, Enzo remains his most steadfast if silent supporter. Enzo is a reliable companion and a likable enough narrator, though the string of Denny's bad luck stories strains believability. Much like Denny, however, Stein is able to salvage some dignity from the over-the-top drama. (May)

This is the story of how one man deals with the death of his wife, Eve, and his struggle to keep his daughter, Zoe, as told through the eyes of his dog, Enzo. Denny is a semi-professional race car driver who excels, of course, at racing in rainy conditions. It is heart-rending to understand how much some will do to tear a family apart. Eve's parents, in their grief, have come to the conclusion that Denny was responsible for Eve not seeking medical attention and is an unfit parent for their granddaughter. The struggle between the three is the key story but details about racing will endear this read to fans. While the ending is hokey the theme of this read is to encourage people to follow their dreams.

This was a quick read, with many "aha" moments for people closely connected with their dogs. Enzo writes well and it's the pinnacle of anthropomorphism, which many a dog family believes in. Only thing I didn't enjoy was: too much car racing. (Maybe the title should have warned me.) Recommended for people like me who don't usually read "dog-books" because we sort of live one daily. (So, dog's perspective: ****; car racing: **)

I read The Art of Racing in the Rain for this month's "Weather" theme in my online book club, The Reading Cove.

I can definitely see why the book is popular with many dog lovers. Enzo the dog narrates with a very high level of intelligence, dry humor and sentimentality. The analogy of his observations about human life and handling a race car in the rain was insightful at first but quickly felt pretty overindulgent and milked for all it was worth.

I found much of the book depressing and therefore skimmable. Enzo's owner Denny suffers a terrible loss followed by serious legal issues, all through Enzo's POV. So for me, something that started out cute, became surprisingly disturbing and maudlin before too long.

All in all, NYT bestseller or not, I can't say I would recommend this book to people who haven't read it unless you're emotionally tied to dogs, otherwise you may find that it just plain gets silly even before the halfway mark and your reading time would be much better spent on something else. This was better suited for a short story. 300 pages from the dog's POV became a bit ridiculous and begs a raised eyebrow at the emotional stability of the author. 2.75 stars.

A excellant story of a man and his dog, told from the dogs' point of veiw. Enzo is a terrier mix and loves his human Denny. Denny and Eve live in a nice small home in seattle and they have a child they name Zoe...
Everything is going wonderful until Eve starts getting sick, headaches, throwing up and mood swings.. she refuses to go to the doctor and Enzo can smell something is wrong.
Eve has a brain tumor and later passes away.. her family connive to takeZoe away from Denny and plot a 15 year old girl to say she was molested by him.
Denny's only friend is Enzo....

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.

Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.

On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoe whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoe at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.

Heartwarming and totally engaging. You will fall in love with Enzo, a dog with enormous understanding. Perhaps you have had a dog like him who seemed to understand more than you thought was possible. If so, you have been blessed.

I wasn't sure I would like this book, told from the dog's point of view, but it was a treasure and I loved it. You will too, I'm sure.

This was a very cute, but horribly sad, book told from the point of view of a dog named Enzo. It was a pretty good book, but to be honest nothing spectacular. I did enjoy that the book was told from the dog's point of view. It made me look at OUR dog differently, even though I'm positive she doesn't think the same way that Enzo did in the book. I tried to imagine how the book would be if told in third person, or in first person but from the point of view of a human character, and came to the conclusion that it wouldn't have been nearly as popular this way. The dog had some insights that a human wouldn't have had, noticed things that a human wouldn't have seen... but also was left out of many events that a human would have experienced and may have changed the feel of the novel.

It's a quick read, doesn't take much brain power in most cases, although there are a few passages that kind of make you think. There are many parts of the book that will make you want to yell at it, or yell at the characters. Nothing spectacular; it won't be one I read over and over again. But I'm glad I read it once.

I started out reading this book with great anticipation about seeing the world through the eyes of a dog. (Was wondering what my dogs would say about life with me!) However, I was sadly disappointed, quit reading after 100 pages, and decided reading those first hundred pages was a waste of my time. The comments about Enzo'a bathroom habits and its discovery by a flock of birds, plus Enzo's comment about the possibility of his "having an erection if he had still had testicles" added nothing to the story. In my opinion they were stricly "shock value" comments amd more than I cared to contemplate.

As a dog lover, I thought I would fall in love with this book. But the talking dog thing barked a little untrue. I appreciate a dog's wisdom and point of view, but the story seemed a bit "far fetched." At one point, Enzo took the witness stand in defense of his owner, because dogs never lie. A bit simplistic in terms of the plot, but overall worth reading.
