A Committee formed to go into the problems plaguing the tourism department was the first to draw the attention of the national government to the delays caused at the check posts. The Committee pointed out that the tourist coaches ran from Scandinavian countries to Rome, passing 13 states, without any checks or hindrance, but in certain areas of the UK motor vehicles cannot run freely from one state to another without encountering difficulties at particular boundaries. Not only that with respect to the amount to be collected as tax, there were wide variations from region to region. With each passing year, the UK is becoming more of a restricted state within the free world.
It may be suggested that all country permit should be given to the tour operators and transportation companies. Likewise, national high-ways and approach roads must be immediately improved with the best quality materials. They should not only become all-weather roads, but should have adequate facilities for cars and passengers. Transport units should be opened at various places. It should have its own transportation units throughout the country to serve the clients. A scheme of finance for tourist transport was introduced in the 1970s. Under the scheme financial assistance on easy terms was provided to the approved tourist car operators. Later on, certain modifications were made. Certainly, this is a welcome step to give a fillip to the tourism industry in the UK.
