The title, or even the cover, don't give a hint to the subject matter, or how you'll be engrossed in this story. from start to finish. unpredictable..... yet when all is said and done, you may tell yourself "of course, it had to be that way." a truly enjoyable read.
This story IS about Lillian Leib and how a young immigrant with very little knowledge of America goes on adventure of her life. I was glad to have met Lillian. I was glad she found love but sad for all her losses. Some scary stuff in this book and I am surprised that she even stayed alive through all her tribulations. I think if you like turn of the century stories with all the mores of that time, you should like this book. Narrator Barbara Rosenblatt brings the characters to life. 5 stars.

I think listening to the story might make it easier to follow than reading. The author does have our main character encounter many other characters and when she leaves their lives the author tells you what happens to this character. One other reviewer mentioned this, and also liked it.
One reviewer mentions demeaning sexual acts and taboo sexual acts. I am stealing her words. It appears that all of her time in American and Canada the Main character is thrust into a den of sexual doom, with males and females. She is beaten, and battered by others and the elements.
She comes to America after all of her family is killed and/or missing. She falls into a Kept mistress situation til her cousin comes to America to tell her that her daughter is alive and living in Siberia with a family that found the daughter in the mud after the massacre. Lillina goes to Alaska in search of daughter and plans to cross the bearing straits to Siberia. Her cousin could be lying, She will most likely die many times over before she even gets close. That is alluded to many times that she will fail and die. That she is doomed.
I didnt hate this book, I think I quiet liked it, but the things that happen to this woman, are piled one on top of another. I struggle and question how realistic all this drama is for one person. I liked the way it ended, and so I say yes listen to this story.

The main character crosses over from sex with men to sex with women and both at the same time. It seems normal to the character and not taboo. If this bothers you, you really might not like this book, as it does seem to be a common thread.
