This was a great book. Full of suspense and thrills. I wasn't sure who the bad guy was until the last couple chapters and I wasn't disappointed. This is a C.J. Box stand alone book and it is a great one. It involves a back packing trip deep into Yellowstone National Park. It will keep you reading all night because one incident leads to the next and the next, etc. I highly recommend this book to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Found this CJ Box story to be disappointing!
This is the 3rd book I have not liked and think
it might be time for me to quit reading this
author. Much too wordy for me and felt like I
was getting nowhere quick!

Another fast-paced thrill ride from Box. Box is one of my favorite crime writers. I have read all of his Joe Pickett series and consider it one of the best in the genre. This book features Cody Hoyt, who is somewhat the opposite of Pickett. While Pickett is a straight shooter who plays by the rules and goes by the book, Hoyt is a hard-drinking police officer in Montana who uses any means at his disposal to get justice. This is the second book to feature Hoyt, the first was Three Weeks to Say Goodbye and the third is The Highway. I've read and enjoyed both of these and look forward to more by Box.

Back of Beyond has Hoyt on the trail of the murderer of his friend and AA sponsor, Hank Winters. Winters was found burned to death in his cabin in what looked like an accident or suicide but Hoyt thinks otherwise. His unorthodox investigation leads him to suspect the killer is on wilderness horse-back trip in a remote area of Yellowstone National Park. And then it turns out that Cody's son, Justin is also on the wilderness outing. But why was Winters killed and why is the killer on this remote outing. The reasons are methodically pieced together in this great outing from Box. As usual, I would highly recommend this one as well as anything else written by Box.

My favorite author and he did not let me down this time either. I love the Joe Pickett series. The endings are always too short but that is his style. Did not predict who all the bad guys were this time.

This is the first in the Cody Hoyt series by C.J. Box. I was hooked on his other series Joe Pickett, but decided to go for a change of pace. No pun intended, but this book has Box written all over it. The characters and suspense will have you locked in about a third of the way into the book. It didn't take me long before like any Joe Pickett book I became obsessed in finding all the answers and simply couldn't put the book down!! There are so many twists and turns that this one will have you guessing to the very end. Full of surprises and suspense and I kid you not it had the hair on the back of my neck up a few times!! Cody Hoyt is not without flaws as you would suspect with a Box main character. He has he his addiction being a former alcholic and currently in AA, and also a heavy chain smoker. He also happens to be a cop, but not your typical cop and that is where the fun starts. I won't give anything away as its much too precious to find out on your own, but in this one we find him investigating a murder of a friend. Eventually it turns personal as he finds the only thing dear and perfect to him, his only son Justin suddenly is in the path of danger. Great job again C.J. Box for giving me some sleepless nights, I can't wait to see what you have in store next for Cody Hoyt. I also need to find some precious time to get back to your other main series with Joe Pickett!!

Cody Hoyt is a cop and an alcoholic. He has been sober for the last two months and is struggling to remain that way. When his AA Sponsor is found dead in a house fire, it is determined that his death was either an accident or suicide. Cody isn't buying it. He thinks someone killed Hank and he starts investigating Hank's death. Cody finds a clue that points to a company that takes tourists on horseback into the far reaches of Yellowstone National Park. Cody believes the murderer may be among the group. Time is of the essence as he tries to catch up with them, especially when he learns that his teenage son is also on the trip.

It took a little while to get into the story, but by the time Cody started tracking the group through the National Park, I was totally hooked. There were many suspects to weed through. I kept changing my mind about the identity of the killer. There was also a lot of suspense since a handful of the people in the group had secrets. I enjoyed this mystery and I loved the twist at the end of the story.

This is my first book by this author, but it won't be my last. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Holter Graham who does a superb job. My rating: 5 Stars.

I wasn't thrilled with this book, and be aware it is NOT a Standalone, but Book 1 of a new series.

I thought this was a great book. I don't agree that it's boring, there was always something happening and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have not liked some of his Pickett books but, for me at least, this was very enjoyable.
