I received this book from the library. This is very good for a first time author. Driving home one rainy night, Cassie Larkin sees a man and a woman fighting on the side of the road. After calling 911, the veterinarian makes a split-second decision that will throw her sedate suburban life into chaos. Against all reason and advice, she gets out of her mini=van and chases after the violent man, trying to help his victim. When Cassie physically tries to stop him, he suddenly turns on her and spits out an ominous threat: Let her die and I'll let you live.
A veterinarian trained to heal, Cassie can't let the woman die. But while she's examining the unconscious victim, the attacker steals her car. Now he has her name, address, and he knows about her children. Though they warn her to be careful, the police assure her that the perpetrator, a criminal named Carver Sweet, won't get near her. Cassie isn't so sure.
The next day, Halloween, her husband disappears while trick-or-treating with their 6 year old daughter. As Cassie desperately searches for answers, nothing is as random as it seems. The book takes off from here. It has a lot of twists and turns as well as red herrings. I would definitely read this author again.

Cassie Larkin is on her way home from work when she sees a man and a woman fighting beside the road. After calling 911, Cassie does exactly what the 911 operator told her not to do. Cassie got out of her car and confronted the man holding a knife. As the sirens are getting closer, the man utters a threat to Cassie and steals her car. When she tells the police that the guy now has her house keys and address, they aren't concerned, believing that he will not be sticking around the area. The next day Cassie's husband Sam takes their little girl trick-or-treating in the neighborhood and never returns home. Cassie finds her daughter standing with strangers. Sam is not answering his cell phone.
This debut novel by Heather Chavez is a clear winner. It is a twisty, fast-paced thriller. Though Cassie makes a couple questionable choices in this mystery and I had to suspend disbelief a time or two, I couldn't put this book down. I wasn't sure where this twisty story was going, but I was hooked. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

I appreciate the imagination of authors and this one is a BIG imagination of events
Cassie is a vet (not that it matters), Sam is a school teacher, they have 2 kids
Then Cassie helps a woman in distress along side of the road by saving her from being killed---well that was mistake
Cassie identifies the person to the police and they immediately know who it is--okay--but does that stop Cassie? No, because then her husband goes missing and she finds out he was having an affair and she continues to investigate on her own (really?)
When I got to the middle of this book it still wasn't clear what was going on and I had to skim a lot of pages that were just descriptions that just didn't matter, finally I hit just the right page that gets you into what exactly this story is about and from that point it went pretty fast----but I don't consider this a great book to recommend, it took me about 6 hours to read this but as I said I had to skip and skim the pages that just don't mean anything (descriptions that I didn't need to move the story forward)
It'll probably get rave reviews but for me I barely give it 3 stars
