OMgosh! I enjoyed this one! Karen Robards weaves a tale of suspense and romance (with just the right amount of each). Maddie Fitzgerald is attacked in a New Orleans hotel and FBI Agent Sam McCabe thinks that she's the target of a serial killer.

Robards' writing style is an easy read, which is good because you'll be in a hurry to see what happens next.

Veteran romance/crime bestseller Robards (Beachcomber; Whispers at Midnight) delivers another hold-your-breath drama, this time starring FBI agent Sam McCabe and advertising executive Maddie Fitzgerald. The sardonic hunk and the honey-eyed businesswoman are thrown together when Maddie becomes the latest target of a serial killer that Sam and his tubby assistant, E. P. Wynne, have been chasing for weeks, with no success. The body count already stands at six, but Maddie has neither the time nor the inclination to play bait for McCabe's booby trap to catch the killer. She needs the time to win the Brehmer's Dog Chow account (worth $10 million) lest her fledgling St. Louis ad agency go under before the end of the year. (And she has a secret past that she's determined not to share with anyone.) Soon enough, however, McCabe and his team are conducting a surveillance op from within her apartment, and that's when the suspense and romance really start to heat up. Though Robards's amorous prose is breathy as always ("His hand was warm and dry, big, long-fingered"; "Oh, god, he had dimples"), her pacing is excellent, and regular infusions of humor keep the story bouncing along between trysts and attacks. This one is sure to please fans.

Joyce Bean more than earns her pay in this romantic mystery as advertising executive Maddie Fitzgerald revisits an unhappy past, lives an uncertain present, and faces a deadly future. Along the way she encounters a gravelly voiced woman who can turn her firm around; an FBI Agent whose Southern drawl is a bit too syrupy; and a killer whose disguised voice intones threats over a cell phone. Bean voices Maddie's emotional pleas with authentic despair and lends a coarse, crass tone to the many thugs who attack her. As the attempts on Maddie's life escalate, so do the sparks flying between her and Agent McCabe--and that distraction may be just what the killer awaits

This is the first K. Robards book I've read and I'll definitely be searching for more. This is not your typical FBI vs. Serial Killer vs. Mob story line. Definitely loved the characters and the plots.

just when you think you know someone, it's time to think again. that's what you'll be saying after you read this breath-taking romantic suspense. maddie thinks her attack was just a random act of violence. but when sam enters the picture, things begin to change. maddie can't stand the thought of him being around, but she soon realizes, she can't stand the thought of him NOT being around. robards has you at the edge of you seat waiting to see what will happen, a real page turner.

I really enjoyed this book. Maddie Fitzgerald, owner of a small advertising agency in St. Louis, travels to New Orleans in hopes of snaring a large account to save her struggling company. While there, a man breaks into her hotel room and tries to kill her. Maddie manages to escape, only to be followed by FBI agents headed by Special Agent Sam McCabe, who's tracking a serial killer and thinks Maddie is his next victim. Maddie does not trust the FBI and refuses their offer of protection, but when someone shoots at her in her apartment complex, she catapults into McCabe's arms and agrees to be bait for the killer. A treacherous game of cat and mouse follows, placing both in peril, along with the added danger of their fatal attraction for one another.

The plot has been done many times before but this book is filled with hot romance and spine-tingling suspense, this is a fun read for mystery and romance lovers alike.

FBI Special Agent Sam McCabe is tracking a serial killer who leaves one-word clues to the identity of his next victim. When the next clue is the name "Madeline", the search for the next victim starts. But, they're too late. In a New Orleans hotel, a woman named Madeline Fitzgerald has been murdered. But, surprisingly, there is a second woman with the exact same name staying at the hotel too. This Maddie was attacked in the middle of the night and somehow got away from the killer. In order for Sam to figure out which Maddie was the target, he needs to use her for bait to entice the serial killer out of hiding.

This is romantic suspense at it's best. Maddie doesn't trust the FBI because of things in her past and really thinks she can handle the whole situation on her own. Of course, Sam knows that isn't possible and pledges to keep her safe. Good twist as to the identity of the killer. My rating: 5 Stars.

It's a business trip that takes attorney Maddie Fitzgerald down to New Orleans, but it's hardly business as usual when a man breaks into her hotel room and tries to kill her. Barely escaping with her life, the sexy, stylish thirty-two-year-old brunette calls the police and finds herself face-to-face with FBI agent Sam McCabe. Unnerved by his questions-and his good looks-Maddie is told she's been targeted by a hired killer, one who has eluded McCabe for years.

Apparently, she's been mistaken for another woman, an FBI informant of the same name who was also staying at the hotel that night. McCabe grills her, and then disappears. Shaken, she finishes her business and returns home to St. Louis.

But days later, Maddie is attacked a second time, and again McCabe returns to question her. He convinces her that the only way she'll ever be safe again is if the killer is caught, and the quickest way to nab him is to use her as bait. Maddie reluctantly agrees, and sparks fly and then ignite as McCabe shadows her. But their unexpected romance throws McCabe off his stride-and puts Maddie in the hands of a killer.

A bewitching combination of pulse-pounding twists and blazing romance, Bait is the remarkable Karen Robards at her best.
