The second novel in the books related to Miles Vorkosigan -- demonstrates McMaster Bujold's enormous talent for characterization and tightly plotted books. It is the story of the world of Barrayar and the birth of Miles. A great work if you do not have a copy of it.

Second in the Vorkosigan saga, containing the story of Miles' parents after they married as told from his mother's perspective. A great heroine and a wonderful series!

Cordelia Naismith, legendary ship commander in the Betan Expeditionary Force, a woman who beat the Barrayaran militarists at their own game, was never one to fulfill stereotypes. Having married the commander of the forces her side defeated in battle, she was ready to settle down to a quiet life devoted to raising little Vor lordlings.

But Cordelia had not paid sufficient attention to what an important Vor lord she had married; when the Emperor died, only her husband's reputation for honor stood between her adopted planet and the unspeakable horrors of a dynastic civil war fought by first-rate soldiers armed with up-to-the-minute technology...

I began the Miles Vorkosigan series in the middle. Something I do NOT recommend. Barrayar is how his parents' marriage progressed in its early years. Also how Miles got his physical damage. Highly exciting set in the midst of a rebellion. They certainly had a lot of those on Barrayar. Barrayar has lots of action, suspense, and surprises. Just what I have come to expect from Bujold. A fine addition to the series.
