Battenberg and Point Lace Book Author:Nellie Clark Brown, Jules Kliot (Editor), Kaethe Kliot (Editor) The name BATTENBERG LACE has been applied to a form of needle lace only since the early 1890's. The earlier forms of this lace however, date back to the 16th century when it was refered to as Mezzo Punto. In modern times names such as Renaissance Lace, Branscomb Point, Tape Lace, Milanese lace, Irish lace, Belgium lace and "Real Lace" have been ... more »used to describe this technique.
The essential element of the technique is the pre-made tape which outlines and follows the main lines of the design. The voids are then filled with a variety of needle lace stitches using only a needle and thread.
In recent years, Battenberg Lace has taken on new dimensions as the basic technique has been adapted to machine embroidery. While this book is designed for the maker of hand laces, the lace and stitch patterns will be of considerable value to the machine lace maker.
BATTENBERG AND POINT LACE BOOK is a republication of the PRISCILLA BATTENBERG AND POINT LACE BOOK by Nellie Clark Brown, 1912, Priscilla Publishing Company. Published near the end of the great Battenberg era, this book is a compilation of many of the earlier books including the 1892 edition of the Florence Home Needlework and, to our knowledge, is the most complete. An appendix follows illustrating a group of designs published in 1900. Typical of books of this period, most references to materials and supplies as well as prices are no longer relevant and so working notes are provided.« less
