I loved this book. I have honestly never read anything about the Dominican Republic, and sad as this sounds, never even really knew anything about it, ha. But this book really opened my eyes and honestly, how different did they have to fight for their rights like Jews did when it came to Hitler? Dictators are NOT good for a country and this book shows that really well. If you're fond of Holocaust stories then you will be fond of this book as well. I could not put it down!

what an AMAZING book! this story is so powerful... a great combination of historical fiction and insight into a 12 year old's mind. Julia Alvarez is an EXCELLENT author. (other recommendations by her: In the Time of the Butterflies, In the Name of Salome, How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents).
