It has been a long dry season since Kaki Warners last book. This story starts a new trilogy that is based on the success of Warners Runaway Brides Series. It also takes place in Heartbreak Creek thus, many of this towns charming folks have returned to contribute to this new series (Heroes of Heartbreak Creek).

The action is plentiful and written only as Kaki Warner can do it. However, I found myself under-engaged.

Audras father, a noted historian, has been sinking into dementia for some time. In order to keep the familys finances above water, Audra took on the task of transcribing her fathers notes. Eventually, she was writing complete studies in her fathers name. When her father receives an award for which Audra did the work, she decides it is time to decamp from Baltimore.

Ethan was trained as an architect; his first notable project was to create a home for elderly sailors Salty Point Marine Hospital. Building at a time before the vagaries of California geological land shifts were understood, Ethans masterpiece was a disaster that killed three people.

Although he was not indicted for the deaths, Ethan has left his career in architecture behind. Ethan has come to Heartbreak Creek as an employee of the railroad. Ethan and Audra are destined to cross horns because Ethan must buy the remaining right-of-ways before the railroad can begin construction and Audra owns the last hold-out property.

I think the thing that bothered me most about this story was the modern layer that covered this book. Folks didnt talk about serial killers and organized acts of vandalism at this time in our history. Ethan notes that some people who kill have no conscience or remorse (psychopaths, in todays parlance). Again, it seems as if modern concepts were placed within a historical setting. Call me old-fashioned, but .

Otherwise, I enjoyed the story a great deal. The second book in this trilogy (Something in His Smile) will be released in July 2014.
