A hurricane is coming and Belinda is thrilled! It seems like a dream come true--just the excuse she needs to stay on the island longer with her grandmother and make enough money to buy her that beautiful shell necklace for her birthday!
I read this book to my children after Hurricane Katrina hit so we could talk about hurricanes. This story brings up the subject... it shows that they are dangerous and one must prepare. The children saw how one needs to realize the danger. Since this one isn't devastating, it helped me talk about hurricanes without them fearing one was going to "get them."
The author went through a similiar experience with her grandmother when she was small, so it really gives this story as real life flavor. I enjoyed seeing the love the granddaughter and grandmother have for each other and how neighbors help each other out. Additionally,
I liked that it has a work ethic embedded into the storyline.
