Gourmet is the best cooking magazine and the "Best of Gourmet" books are even better. Forget the magazine, just get these books - No tiresome ads; just the food and great recipes. The Apple Pie with Walnut Streusel was an instant winner in my house. The Greek recipes are great. I particularly remember the recipe for Lima Beans, stewed large with Tomatoes.
Most recipes are thoughtfully staged. They not only list what can be done ahead of time but also give suggestions on complimentary dishes.
