I am a major fan of all of Stephen White's mysteries involving Dr. Alan Gregory. This one is late in the series, but his home life plays a minor part so reading it out of order isn't particularly jarring.

I've enjoyed several books by Stephen White, but this one is the absolute BEST!! There are so many questions, twist, turns -- it's difficult to put the book down. Try it -- bet you will like it!

I know this says book 11 of a series, but I was pleased to see that it read like a stand alone book. So, if you have not gotten through this series to this point you can take this one and not suffer any gaping holes without reading the previous 10. I was pleased with the book. It had some very twisted plot portions which is exactly what you are looking for in a crime novel. It was a good read for someone who only occasionally does crime novels or mysteries. There wasn't a ton of procedural junk in this story that sometimes puts readers off that might like the story but aren't interested in the finer points of police or legal mechanics. It frees the reader up for just enjoying the narrative and the story. If you only occasionally do this type of fiction give this a try. If you are an experienced reader of this type of material and a stickler for correct police or legal minutia, go somewhere else.

I found this story pretty thrilling and there's some seriously twisted stuff that comes from one of the characters. This story held my interest and I blazed through the chapters pretty quickly, my only complaint is that it runs long in some areas. I wasn't interested in the many geography lessons and weather lessons of Colorado, but if you skim over that you will rnjoy the rest of the pace of the story. I will definetely read more of Mr. White's books.

Psychologist Alan Gregory is on the verge of a midlife crisis. As he ponders his effectiveness as a therapist, he takes on an interesting new patient: Tom Clone, a former death row inmate who was recently exonerated based on DNA evidence. Unbeknownst to Alan, Tom Clone was referred to him by another of his patients Kendra James, the troubled FBI agent who found the evidence which overturned Clone's conviction.
Tom Clone's transition back to civilian life is made difficult by those who do not believe he is innocent. Tom and Kendra grow cautiously closer, but hidden secrets from Kendra's past come out and ultimately endanger the lives of Tom and Alan.
Although Alan, Sam and Lauren do not figure as prominently in this book as in some of the others in the series, The Best Revenge is in my opinion one of the best entries. The character of Kendra is particularly well developed, and the plot takes a number of unexpected twists and turns. This would be a good book to start with for those new to Stephen White.

A friend recently introduced me to Stephen White's character Alan Gregory as I'm currently off work while recovering from multiple spine surgeries this year. Thus, I recognize that currently I likely have more time for reading than others. However, I still value my time and won't read a book that doesn't captivate me. I found this one, and Stephen's prior book "Warning Signs", certainly well worth the time. I truly had trouble putting The Best Revenge down. The psychological intrigue was intense and thoroughly enjoyable. Although I'm reading the entire series in publication order, for someone with limited time I'd certainly highly recommend Warning Signs and The Best Revenge.

This man can write, a thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining great read! and even though I didn't read the whole series, I did not feel left out by not reading all the others first but will get to more of them!

But others who believe he got off on a technicality don't agree that the former medical student deserves his freedom, and they will go to any lengths to make sure he's punished accordingly for the crime of which he was once accused. There are some surprising plot twists here, but more interesting is Gregory's midlife crisis and his declining interest in his work: as his partner responds when he voices doubts about his efficacy as a therapist, "Those are the bricks we lay. If you've started hating the bricks, maybe it's time to reconsider being a brick layer." Certainly Gregory gets himself into more sinister and frightening scrapes than most shrinks, and this is one of his strangest cases.
