This is a great sampler of Hughes witty vignettes of Harlem everyman, Jess B. Semple (Childhood nickname Simple and the B added in adulthood by hisself as he had no middle name.) So dub him Just Be Simple. It is predominately dialog between the (apparent) author, sophisticated and educated, and Simple, a composite of the milieu. It is a clash of their philosophies of life: how to is (Simple) and how it should be (author). Read these entertaining anecdotes; youll ponder way Hughes is hardly known today, except in literary circles.
