Children's literature at its best! Be swept away to a time and place when girls had one "regular" dress and one "good" dress and the city was safe for exploration by three curious, fun-loving girls. This really captures the flavor of growing up middle-class in America in the 1940s.
Book 1 in what is, for my money, the best girls' series of all time. Meet Betsy Ray and Tacy Kelly and their families. The girls are best friends, growing up in turn of the century Minnesota and the series carries the girls and their friends through high school and beyond. EXCELLENT!

Wonderful stories about two young girls, first published in the 1940's. My children loved this series.
"Betsy-Tacy" is the first of a series of children's stories about the friendship between two little girls in a small Mid-Western town in the nineteenth century. It was one of the first chapter books my mother read to me when I was a child, back in the 1940s. The series begins when Betsy and Tacy are both five years old, and goes on until Betsy is a young woman. It was a much different world back then!
from the back...
There are lots of children on Hill Street, but no little girls Betsy's age. So when a new family moves into the house across the street, Betsy hopes they will have a little girl she can play with. Sure enough, they do- a little girl named Tacy. And from the moment they meet at Betsy's fifth birthday party, Betsy and Tacy become such good friends that everyone starts to think of them as one person- Betsy-Tacy.
Betsy and Tacy have lots of fun together. They make a playhouse from a piano box, have a sand store, and dress up and go calling. And one day, they come home to a wonderful surprise- a new friend named Tib.

This is a very cute, good read for young girls. A very wholesome book. My 2nd grader really enjoyed it.
The first book in the Betsy-Tacy series. This stories were first published in the 1940s.
1940s sweet girls book, first in the series.
Absolutely wonderful childrens book! I'm only upset because I didn't read it until I was in my 30's. Beautiful depiction of time and place and really puts things into perspective in terms of how girlhood never really changes. Be it 1900 or 2010, the search for adventure and companionship and the love for your BFF is age-less.
