An enormous and vital story, resoundingly told. The struggle for the Plains-the last great conflict between whites and Indians-requires a book of great expeditionary detail and length to do justice to the...ways of life that met there, and Cooke's novel succeeds with honors. Publishers Weekly
On a remote cattle ranch in a peaceful Wyoming valley, in the hushed villages of beleaguered tribes poised for battle, among the government troops advancing through the blinding snows of a bitter winter, the apocalyptic clash between the Indian and the white man brings together men and women of all races:
Lisa Putnam: a passionate woman whose fight for the Sioux will jeopardize the way of life she loves.
Chris Hardeman: a former army scout trying to redeem his past.
Sun Horse: a Sioux chief who must guide the fate if his threatened people.
Julius Ingram: a former slave, now Lisa's partner, who finds his struggle did not end with the Civil War.
Johnny Smoker: a young man torn between the world of Indian and white.
Their fates-and the fates of both worlds-will be decided in the month of the Snowblind Moon.

Although I rated highly for detailed writing, I felt the 1st half was incredibly confusing, as it jumped from one character to another with no explanation or introduction.
1st half 3.5
2nd half 4.5
So, yeah, I was being generous, because it started getting interesting.
