After reading Orphan Train by same author, I thought I'd found a new author that would thrill me with her excellent storytelling. Christina Baker Kline is, indeed, an excellent writer but Bird in Hand just didn't have the punch and fervor of Orphan Train. Story of two couples, the wives having been best friends since grade school, their husbands two very different personalities. Tragedy early in book makes them question themselves and their relationships. Flashbacks to college years, building the basis of their personalities but not strongly relevant to story. Predictable ending was major disappointment. Will give Ms. Kline another chance tho as her style is an easy read.

Even though this book was written before Orphan Train, I did not read it until after and maybe I was so positively influenced by Orphan Train that I was unable to give this book a higher review. It did not even come close to Orphan Train; but it is a completely different kind of book. The author did build good believable characters, but I did not like them very much. It was hard for me to care what happened to them. I did finish the book, though several times I almost stopped and probably should have since even reading to the end I did not feel compelled to give it a higher review. They made their choices and each found a way to live with those choices and Ms Kline was very adept at tying her story all up nicely.

This is a story about 2 couples and how they relate to each other. One husband is having an affair with the wife of the other couple. Nothing really interesting in this book. I was looking forward to it as I loved "The Orphan Train". It was a disappointment.

Alison is driving home from an event and although didn't cause an accident was involved and a child dies, this accident sets off a series of events that will forever change her life. The concept of small incidents changing a person's path is very interesting to me and this aspect of the book completely kept me reading.

One thing that I loved about this book was the ability to read from everyone's perspective, although it was hurtful to read from those who were living beyond their marriages it was interesting to read their viewpoints.

I read this book straight through in one day. Best friends, two marriages, opposite lifestyles, both rolling along without much thought, until an accident puts pressure on the marriages. When it comes to relationships, opposites attract, but many times that means that one side seems to give more to the relationship, or take more energy from the relationship.
